By Rex LaRose Recreation Director ' The Ute Tribe girls tMM successfully defended their title at the Paiute Tournament in Cedar City as they swept past three opponents on their way to another championship. The IJte girls demolished Richfield 80-outscored Elko Shonettes 89 to 82 and edged Cedar Debbie Ridley was City Most Valuable Player and Nancy Poowegup was chosen to the team. The Ute Tribe Utes participated in the Mens division at the Paiute tournament at the same time and finished second to Richfield. The Utes were led by Randy McCook as they swept by Moapa and Elko to reach the mI. The Ute Chiefs participated in the Annual Fort Hall Mens ' Tournament 9 March and finished 7th. Ron Wopsock, who led the Chiefs in scoring, was selected to the team. The Chiefs were defeated by Ron's of Fort Hall the eventual champion of 1974. This year is the first time a local team has ever won their own tournament at Fort Hall and we extend our congratulations to the champions. We are hopeful that Ron's team will be aide to participate in the Tournament of Tribal Champions later this month. A high school team coached by Alloin Myore participated in the Wyoming Indian High School Tournament at Ethete March The Ute team won over Riverton in the opening round, lost to the Ethete Chiefs Friday and defeated the Ethete J.V.s, Saturday to take third place. Lornie Pinneeoose and Larry Hack were selected to the team. The Ute high school age team will be participating in the Fort Hall high school tournament in early April.. . 6, 58-4- 7. all-st- ar The dates for. the annual girls tournament have not been set at the present time but it looks like we will have ours in late April BosoMT With the arrival of spring the wind of the old horsehide hitting the mitt the crack of the bat (should be ping with the aluminum bats now being used), the boys will be beginning workouts for the coming baseball season. ' 722-226- 3, 6-- New Programs Officer Assumes Duties At U & O Roger Coonrod! former Programs Officer at the Yakima (Washington) Agency has assumed the responsibilities of the same position at the Uintah and Ouray Agency, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Mr. Coonrod brings many years of experience to his new position, having served as Programs Officer for five years at Ft. Hall, Idaho, in addition to six years in Washington. Through born in Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Coonrod spent most of his childhood in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He and his wife, Jean, are the parents of four children. Sixteen of teh nation's finest Indian basketball teams will be participating in the annual event. The first round of play will begin at 5 p.m. on Wed. with the second round slated for 10 a.m. on Thurs. Lower bracket play will begin action at 5 p.m. on Thurs. with second round play slated for Fri. morning at 10. Thfe semifinal round for upper bracket teams will begin Fri. evening at 6:30 with lower bracket teams competing on Sat. morning. The championship finals will begin at 4 with the fourth place game and end at 8:30 with the championship game. The Ute Recreation Department has invited teams from Idaho, Montana, Nevada, California, Arizona, Wyoming, South and North Dakota and Colorado. The teams were selected for invitation by their records against other Indian teams across the country. The tournament will be sanctioned by the National Indian Activities Association as it is planned to have NIAA teams entered. Claire Manning officially assumed responsibilities as ambassador of 800,000 Native Americans to promote better racial understanding after the announcement was made by pageant officials at Sheridan, Wyo. Miss Norris' decision to step down from the title was prompted by her belief that not enough Indians are involved in the program. I feel there is not enough Indian input in the organization, Miss Norris said. She also stated that inclement weather and airline flight problems caused by the fuel shortage limited her travel. Her resignation was accepted by the Indian Days board of directors. A resolution was passed by the board stating Miss Norris has maintained the high standards of Miss Indian America and has completed all of her appearances to date. old Papago beauty queen The entered the Miss Indian America Pageant as Miss Indian Arizona last August. She was named the 20th title holder at the conclusion of the Indian Days Celebration at Sheridan. As Miss Indian America, Claire will interrupt her studies at Arizona State University at Tempe where she is a junior majoring in counseling. The ASU coed whose Indian, names is Acs was selected Alternate to Miss Norris at the 1973 pageant. She was crowned Miss Indian Nevada in 1972. Miss Mannings parents are Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Manning of Owyhee, Nev. Mr. Manning is the chairman of the Shoshone-Paiut- e Tribe on the Duck in northern Nevada.
