Show 1, April 11, 17S Language Skill Class Offered For Utes RECREATION With REX iff ByRexLtRose To say thank you a hundred times is rather redundent but it is necessary to convey our feelings to all of the people who contributed to the success of this years tournament So, Thank yea, Thank yen etc. etc. The Ute Chiefs who represented the Tribe in the Tournament of Tribal Champions and finished third for the second year in a row, won the Championship of the Invitational Tournament in Salt Lake City on March 24. The team put forth a fine effort which was rewarded by the Most Valuable Player award going to Conrad Reed and also by breaking most of the records of the tournament The team broke the ingU game scoring record twice, the total tournament scoring record, the individual game rebounding record went to James Reed of the Utes against the Chiefs and the dubious records of most technical fouls assessed. James Reed was also named to the all tournament In developing a winning tradition for a team it is necessary to emphiy concentration on the total game and it is also necessary to take any advantage you may have over your opponent There is danger in doing this as it often leads to apparent unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of the players. It is the responsibility of the players to keep the importance of winning in line with the concept of the game. We must not allow unsportsmanlike conduct to get to the point where it is damaging to the team, the Recreation Department and the Tribe no matter how hard we want to win. The tragedy in not being able to read and write effectively Is that it tends to Hmit personal creativity which makes for stated David Vanderpoor Kraats of the USU Extension Service, when no one showed up for the personal improvement class for adults on the reservation. He further commented that before the class is cancelled there are a number of important factors to consider. First, the reading class was scheduled at the request of people who wanted to improve skills. their written communications Second, according to school records, the number of dropouts among the Utes is extremely high. One of the primary reasons died for this was the lad: of ability to compete which is caused by the lack of basic reading skills. Among the adult population on the reservation, he added, this problem is a primary reason for caused by the lack of communication skills necessary to compete for the better paying jobs. VanderKraats is proposing the class be presented in the homes for the whole family rather than cancelling it He said this would allow everyone to get involved in tiie education process and give parents a chance to work with their children. He explained each family would set one period day a week for an eight-wee- k during which time the adult education program would send an instructor to their home for the lesson. Along with the standard reading class, special occupational information and vocational testing would be available for the adult members of the family. A series of interest inventories and a battery of aptitude tests is available which can be used to help a person understand what kind of work to da Along they would be with this service, an evaluation of the childrens reading abilities would be determined and discussed with the parents. This procedure could also be set up at the Ute Learning Center on an appointment basis.
