Show Thursday, May 11, 1W2 Sports Summary by Rex L&Rose Recreation Director cedar enr wins title won ETHETE BUCKS COP CROWN The Ethete, Wyoming Bucks combined brilliant teamwork and a tenacious defense to outclass the Provo Cowboys In the 1972 Tournament of Tribal Champions finals. Led by selection George Groesbeck and perennial favorites Shannon Brown and Hugh Friday of the Bucks opened up an early lead and added to It in an easy win. The victory avenged 1971s defeat at the hands of BYU and marked the 13th time this same team has won the Tournament of Tribal Champions. all-tourn- ey the Ute Papoose TourCedar City nament on April 21 and 22 at Whiterocks by defeating Fort Duchesne, Broncos 41 to 40. The Cedar city boys came from 11 points behind at the end of the 3rd quarter and outscored the local boys 12 to 1 to end up on top. TOURNEY CHAMPIONS Of the recent Tournament of Tribal Champions are the Ethete (Wyoming) Bucks coached by Truman Friday. The Ute Chiefs behind Most Valuable Player John Angel finished third with a win over the Ute Running Redskins In a match between two local teams. Ron Wop-soled the Running Redskins Into the final day and was picked as one of the All Tournament team for 72. The leading scorer for the Tournament Bill Loring of Los Angeles led his team to 4th place over the Scottsdale Indians. In an unprecedented event the Ute Little Eagles took consolation honors from upstart Fort Hall to give the Ute Tribe three teams playing on the final day of the tourney. Some fans cannot remember when the Ute Tribe had one team still in on the final day and Its been a long time since a trophy has been kept here. The much sought after sportsmanship award went to the Scottsdale Indians, whose six players demonstrated good ability as well as gentlemanly conduct. All-tourn- ey all-tourn- Bex LaRo.se New Recreation Director Girls Teams Host Basketball Tourney Eight girls basketball teams of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation hosted a tournament April 13, 14 and 15 with games being played alternately at Randlett and Whiterocks gyms. Marietta Reed and Rosella Conetah coordinated the tournament which included ey included three Ute Of the Girls Tourney, played in girls Cookie Pinnecoose (far left, back row), Mary Lee Longhair (third from left, back row), and accepting for Joleen Jenks is Gloria Arrowgarp (far right, ALL STARS back row). seven guest teams. First place trophy was awarded to the Fort Washakie Cougarettes, Wyoming, coached by Mrs. Lottie Shoyo. Second place went to Alvin Longhairs of Fort Duchesne and the Ouray Green Rivers took third place. Coaching the Green Rivers were Gloria Arrowgarp and Violet Jenks. e, Chosen as all stars were Cookie Lee ArrowGloria Longhair, Jdary garp and Joleen Jenks. Two teams from Fort Washakie, participated In the tourney as well as teams from Pocatello, Idaho; Cedar City; Swift-haw- ks Pennl-coos- Towaoc, Colo.; Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.
