Show -- fl r monday, May 1,1978 ESC S3D Minority Crafty folks take bows for skills, trades business Six outstanding Utah craftspersons were honored cently at the fourth annual Craftsman Awards Banquet for their excellence in trade re- skills. Recipients of the awards were Loyd Barker, machinist for 27 years at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co.; Glen A. Bird, aircraft mechanic for 43 years, employed by Interwest Aviation Corp.; Shirley R. Johnsen, electronics manufacturer for 20 years, employed by Sperry Univac; Marion Stauffer, brick mason for 41 years, employed by Tom Nielson Masonry; Charles Syme, boilermakerwelder for 24 years and currently employed by Kennecott Copper Corp.; and Katherine P. Thomas, secretary for 36 years, now working at Chicago Bridge and Iron. An added feature at this years awards banquet was a lost skills award, presented to Charles Williams, a blacksmith who at 72, is still open for business in Nephi. Williams has been at his trade for 50 years. Three special citations were awarded to George S. Bringhurst, Utah Technical College at Salt Lake; J. Rex Griffiths, retired from UTC in Provo; and Floyd C. Thompson, Carpenters Local 184 for their special contributions to vocations education in the crafts. Also, 37 Utah high school seniors were honored with vocational scholarships to technical colleges within the state. Passengers using the scheduled airlines gained 21.4 percent in March over February, to 361,929 from 298,125. Scheduled traffic also increased on a basis by 24.2 percent. Air freight moving through the Salt Lake airport reached 4.3 million pounds, last month, up 13.2 percent over Februarys 3.8 million pounds, and up 3.9 percent over last March.
