Black youths who have plenty to complain about (with about 40 unemployment) are nevertheless not out in the streets burning down our cities. There is a good deal of political scandal in the news but it doesnt seem as all pervasive as in the days of Watergate. The percentage bet would call for yet another devastating war in the Middle East, but at the moment the chances of peace have never looked better. The Russians are as mysterious as ever. Our government was not able to coordinate tracking efforts with the Soviet Union when their spy satellite crashed in Canada. But the man on the street does not perceive a Communist threat to a degree that even approaches the paranoia of the 1950s. There is a growing realization that nationalism is an ever stronger force than Communism. Hence we see the reality of a situation in which both the Russians and the Communist Chinese are on better terms with us that either are with the other. Even in Rhodesia blacks and whites are talking a bit. And the riots of South Africa are once again out of the front page. What better time to be the President of the United States? Acutually it must be one of the worst. Think back to early 1940s: Corregidor here, Corregidor here. They are not here yet. We are waiting for God knows what. How about a chocolate soda. Lots of heavy fighting going on. . . .They are throwing men and shells at us and I feel sick to my stomach. They bring in the wounded every minute. We will be waiting for you guys to help. The jig is up. Everyone is bawling like a baby. They are piling dead and wounded in our tunnel. I know now how a mouse feels. Caught in a trap waiting for guys to come along and finish it up. Got a treat. Canned pineapple. My name is Irving Stroling. Get this to my mother, Mrs. Minnie Stroling, 605 Barley Street, Brooklyn, New York. So came the last words from our troops in Corregidor. The kind of thing that all Americans could understand. President Roosevelt didn't have to give speech after speech convincing the Americans that the Germans and the Japanese were a danger. The guy on the street understood that clearly. Mr. Roosevelt had Tojo and Hitler and the K APPOINTMENT ONLY! Depression to keep him. And yes, I mean help. They were simple evils that could be understood by the average man. Truman and Eisenhower had the threat of Communism. Kennedy had the threat of Communist technical superiority. Johnson had the Vietnam war which, while not uniting us, did tend to divert our attention away from more complicated matters. Richard Nixon had the Arab oil embargo. It was easy to understand at first. Later on there was to be talk of conspiracy but at first the man on the street understood the issue completely. We needed oil they had oil. They were in the process of raising the prices. President Ford was our first President for a long time to hold office without a generally recognized crisis. We all know wlvit happened to him. Good old Jimmy Carter has the same problem. - What w'ords can he use to convince Americans that all hell is about to break loose if we dont come to terms with our energy problem? A mild winter, more North Slope oil from Alaska and a price freeze by nations continue to lull Americans into a false sense of security. But its an ugly problem that cant go away. A threat that is equal in every way to the others that past presidents have faced. But how in the world, if you were President, would you get Americans to understand the long range implications of $31 billion trade deficits? oil-exporti- ng Dollars flowing overseas to buy oil can only mean less money over here to create jobs in the United States. A dropping dollar simply increases the relative price of foreign goods and therefore adds to inflation in this country. And so it goes. Big and seemingly unsolvable problems. Id choose Hitler any time. This country is still big and strong enough to solve problems wc understand. But how docs Jimmy Carter convince the American people Lliat wc arc in the beginning of what could easily be the greatest threat our nation has ever faced? Mr. Carter must dream of being President for eight years If he doesnt come to terms with our nations energy problems, Mr. Hoover may have a new friend. If Mr. Carter docs work out a solution, he is every bit as great as a Roosevelt. Letter To The Editor !V Trades considered! $259,000 I W Realty 3950 South 23rd East Salt Lake City, Utah 841 17 (801)272-420- 5 J) Frankly, am surprised, that a publication such as yours, would include the series, Showdown at the Bar-X- , by Parker M. Nielson. Had I read the series in the Rolling Stone or a comparable underground publication, I would have thought it a little more appropriate. But from an editorial standpoint, considering your readership, I would say it I was extremely bad judgement to include it in your paper. If I had to choose who was in the right or wrong relative to the incident prompting this story, my vote would go with the arresting officer. Curt Dowdlc, Manager Prowswood Realty |
