Show INKLINGS The Prince Column by Scaevola A few weeks ago on this page, Kent Shearer did a trenchant analysis of the political prospects of Wayne Owens, former Congressman from the Second District, and now a mission president in Eastern Canada. Shearer's conclusion: that Owens would run for Congress again next year. To do otherwise, he argued, would lead to his political extinction, as the voters forgot about him. and leadership of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party in Utah passed into other hands (Te Wilson's). What follows may not be trenchant political analysis, but it leads me to the inevitable conclusion that Owens will not run for Congress next year. To be brief about it, there is no way he can do so gracefully. He can do it, all right. After all, any mission president who can practice law in Washington once a month can wangle a trip to Utah to file for the race at the appropriate time. And there is no doubt that Owens continues to have political ambitions. He makes no secret of them. They come out in letters to friends, in conversations with acquaintances in Washington, and even in talks to his own missionaries in Canada. The dangers in running for Dan Marriotts seat, however, are considerable. For one thing, Marriott is an incumbent, and incumbents are never as easy to beat as they seem. I happen to feel that most of the d Republican talk about Marriott's is political maturity and toughness and that he is, in fact, quite beatable. But even at that, he will not fall out. of office, particularly with both the Gam and Hatch And losing to machines at his disposal. Marriott would be certain political death. There is, besides, the political risk of new-foun- self-servin- g, alienating Church members by appearing too eager, too willing to sacrifice the work of the Lord to accommodate filing deadlines. Preliminary campaign work wrould also have to be done prior to release, if the campaign were to be a success. An early release would look even worse to these members. It is widely believed (I believe it myself) that Owens' lack of identification as a Church member hurt him in his race against Jake Garn in 1974. If so, there is an equal danger that too much indentification might hurt him in 1978, both with the contingent in Salt Lake County, and with Church members finding too little dedication in the politician. Then too, what does he gain? Everyone knows Owens has no interest in being a Congressman. His goal is the Senate (if not beyond), and always has been. Should he defeat Marriott in 1978, he could not run against Gam in 1980 without confirming the already prevalent judgement that he is just too ambitious to be trusted. At the least, he would have to wait until Hatch comes up in 1982, and who know what might happen by then? Ted Wilson's ambitions wait in the wings, and will at some point have to be slaked. If Owens wants a rematch with Gam, and I believe he does, he would be crippling himself to run for Marriott's seat in 1978. His only alternative is to find himself a job with considerable visibility, and wait for the 1980 Senate race. A man with Owens dedication and ability (not to mention his connections among the General Authorities) should have no anti-Morm- on real difficulty. Thus the conclusion: Owens will not run against Marriott in 1978. I just wish I had published my opinion before Owens recent visit with Congressman Gunn McKay, at which time he announced the same conclusion. by Chuck Akertow Business ethics and public confidence It seems that one of the reasons for corner off the quality of his product or unfairly boosting the price or engaging in some other unethical practice which simply contributes to our national inflationary problem. Several professions, among them accounting, law, real estate, medicine and others, have adopted codes of ethics and strictly enforce them. A similar standard should be sought by the general businessman. The return to honest business practices is essential. Disclosures by several large national corporations concerning payoffs and other activities both nationally and internationally erode public confidence in the free enterprise system. This, coupled with illegal campaign contributions and the like, by large national corporations only highlight the bankruptcy of business ethics. Jimmy Carter said He would rather commit political suicide than do anything to hurt Israel. Translated into terms we can all understand, that means we will continue to be taxed to support that country, no matter what she does. Our aid is already well over $2 billion a year and of course they want more. We give about $600 for every man, woman & child in the country. And when we happen to suggest that all our money ought to entitle us to some say, they accuse us of meddling in their affairs. Then, the next thing we see is our President saying that he would, in effect, pour gasoline on himself before he would hurt Israel. Now that's the kind of thing that ought to get a person. But on this beautiful Sunday it cant even come close. This is my favorite time of year and I find it impossible to get worked up over a billion dollars or so. A billion, as most of us know, is a thousand million. Get a thousand people together with one million dollars, spend it all and you know what an average day in Washington feels like. Since its too nice a day to look for a calculator youll just have to take these figures on blind faith. I read them in the Extension of Remarks section of the Congressional Record and pass them on for what it is worth. Most people have lost sight of what a billion means: One billion seconds ago the first atomic bomb had not upset. been exploded. He could all out the stupidities of government control. Hed have a point perfect opportunity to take a good shot at Ralph Nader. Hell, he might even work in a dirty shot at Betty Furness. This one takes me all the way back. As you may remember, you either loved New York or Brooklyn in the early 50 s. Anyone who didn't care was a nerd. In 1955 I was 14 years old. My father told me that if the Dodgers got in the World Series, he would take me there. Well, they did and he did. My Uncle, Bob Prince, was the voice of the Pittsburg Pirates at the time. He met us in New York and took me down before one of the games to introduce me to the players.
