Effective last week, the ordinance increases sewer service charges for residences and businesses and calls for surcharges to be assessed on those discharging sewage with large amounts of waste material. New measures for enforcement of the law and penalties for violation are also included. A survey by the National Enterprise of businesses that might be affected revealed that most were either unfamiliar with the ordinance or did not yet know what its impact would be. Regulation unnecessary The new law provides for an average $2. per month charge for residential users, up from a $1.25 average. Business charged 10 cents had been per 100 cubic feet of water used and no surcharge for ivaste concentration. The new law charges 16 cents per 100 cubic feet (or a minimum of $2.50) plus a surcharge based on waste concentration. The city will periodically inspect sewer discharges to determine that surcharge. Extra million dollars new charges will generate an extra million dollars, Petersen said. Last year, The sewage charge revenue totaled $1.5 million. Increased regulation is unnecessary, Oeser com- mented. Were very careful about what we put down, said Joe Broschinsky, an at Crown Plating Co. The ordinance shouldnt have if much impact on Crown theyre fair with us, he said. s A spokesman at milk processing plant admitted he hadn't been able to obtain a copy of the ordinance as yet. elec-troplat- cr Safe-way- Petersen said the new ordinance will allow the city to qualify for Environmental Protection Agency funds for expansion of sewage disposal facilities. The EPA had mandated ordinances, equal share such as this one, which put the fair share of the burden for paying for sewage disposal on industry as well as Peterson believes industry should pay more since it puts dowrn strong sewage. He also pointed out that despite the rate increase. Salt Lake City's charges are among the lowest in the area and in the country. home-owner- s. m & caMss ?
