The trio. Bob, Kim and Jeff Burkinshaw, has spent over $70,000 on the project thus far, said Bob, (Burkinshaw, senior) and they plan to operate the transit service at a profit state permitting. The Burkinshaws, all j employees of Kennecott, plan to run eight shuttle vans, each with 16 seat capacity, to various destinations at the Kennecott facility three times daily. They are presently operating four buses to the accommodation of 240 men. Bob Burkinshaw said he originally got the idea from a booklet published by the federal government during the energy crisis in 1974. Now his only problem, he claims, is getting state approval cheaply enough to still operate his company, Yose-mit- e Transit, Inc., at a profit. Burkinshaw received his first temporary permit to operate only one bus at a cost of $3,000, and he said that he has got to find a cheaper way to obtain the licenses. I certainly dont want to pay $3,000, to the PSC every time I want to license a van, At that rate I he said. wouldnt stand to make any money, even in the long run. Burkinshaw said he can save about 200 gallons of gasoline daily by operating one van, not to mention the savings incurred by eliminating the wear and tear on automobiles. The guys who ride the vans for $1 a day think its a great idea, he said, and Kennecott Copper is in favor of the idea. The only problem weve encountered is the government. It seems as though any time someone wants to operate a business a profit, the state comes in to limit them in various ways. One state roadblock, he explained, is obtaining a certificate of convenience. Applicants for that certificate, usually public bus and taxi lines, must prove necessity of the operation, and they must provide group insurance. The next step is a hearing before the PSC and enduring red the tape that traditionally follows, coupled with various legal fees. But should they the Burkinshaws believe their brainstorm will set a widely followed precedent. And to mass transit, they will add a new three-memb- FREE PICKUP ui & DELIVERY i Paper Banners Screen Process Graphic Design Magnetics & Decals Convention Signage Machine Showcards V V $ er per-server- e, 2365 So.
