They want us to go above and beyond realistic standards. Kennecott's Magna plant presently pumps out 230 tons of sulfur oxide and or particulates per day about 9.6 tons of pollution per hour. Company officials say their new tall stack will cut pollutants to about six tons an hour when completed next year. Still, that is only half good enough to suit the Environmental Protection Agency. EPA requirements call for no more than three tons of pollution per hour by July 1977. The environmental specialist expects the EPA will relax its standards by next year, however. Our engineers are confident that we will be able to meet EPA standards by the end of July 1977, he said. "But if the EPA doesn't change its mind, the case will be in litigation. Most of the $208 million, Hooser said, is being spend on mist precipitators, scrubbers, heat exchangers, absorbing towers, reactors, fans mixing chambers and other equipment designed for long-ru- n sulfur capture and better pollution control. He said most of the visible smoke will be eliminated when the new emission systems begin operation next year. Work on the new facilities is about 42 percent complete. And, he added, the new emission systems will have no effect on actual copper production.
