Langlois, President, The Tree House 1952 West 1500 South Salt Lake City, Utah 84104 In previous columns I have discussed problems with indoor plants: watering, and its usually overwatering and light conditions, and it is usually inadequate light. While overuse of the watering can and lack of a little sunshine account for the majority of the problems there are some other things to be considered too. Whether you talk to your plants or not, take a good hard look and turn a keen ear and you will find it is saying, Hey, look me over! And its right. A careful inspection will usually prevent a small problem from periodically a disaster. Remember your indoor plant is a becoming major living thing and like all other living things, each is a little different, and each will act and react a little differently. If you observe carefully you will detect insects or changes in appearance that signal a problem. Among the common insect problems some are quite easy to observe and others are considerably more difficult. Mealy bug appears as a tiny cotton ball. You will observe tiny cottony splotches usually nested in the crotch where the leaf joins the stem. When you see this, take a cotton swab dip it in rubbing alcohol and wipe the stem clean. Inspect the plant carefully to insure you got rid of all of them. , Thrips are tiny e bugs that seem to come out of the soil when the pot is disturbed. Spray the soil with any good commercial insectiside designated for use on indoor plants. Repeat the treatment until no further evidence of the problem exists. A good systemic will also do the job. Red spider mites are often difficult to detect until considerable damage has been done. Potentially the most devastating of all common pests, the spider mite is at the same time most difficult to 'detect and also difficult to control. Inspect the underside of the leaves and look for tiny white dots that in the beginning are no bigger than a pinpoint. The spider mite is highly prolific and as the colony grows, which it will do rapidly, you will in addition see tiny reddish specs which are the more mature spider mites; and also you may observe some webbing between the branches. By the time you see the webbing, however, you have an extremely serious One which will leave your plant irreparable problem. damaged. Therefore, it is important that you continually observe the underside of the leaves of your plant and look for the tiny white dot. Most indoor plant sprays are effective against the spider mite. When the underside of the leaf is thoroughly sprayed, however, in that they are prolific little devils, it is necessary to spray and repeat the treatment every week for five to eight weeks, in order to completely cure the problem. If after that period of time there is still evidence of the spider mite, switch to a different type of insecticide. You may have the misfortune of having acquired a strain that is resistant to the particular insecticide that you have been using. 4 4 Your image is important... 4 4 4 4 (Q-tip- ), fly-lik- ...we specialize in business backgrounds space planning remodeling carpeting drapery wall coverings accessories furniture interior design Lyngle Bros.
