It would be a disservice to put him in a situation where he would be bound to fail. Briggs, meanwhile, says that he will raise his standard for eighth grade graduation even higher for the class yet read at sixth grade of levels? Then on the heels of that came this: Parents in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., suing the school board to prevent the graduation of their daughter. The George Garretts are trying to prevent their daughter from graduating because they say she, 19, can barely read and write.' determination to educate everybody have we considered the possibility that education has to be IN OUR force-fed- ? This Chicago area school Albert superintendent, Briggs, does not sound like a hard-nosHe sounds like an educator who is consciene. tiously concerned for the best interest of the students in his charge. It was more than a year ago that he served notice on the schools in his district that eighth graders would have to improve reading skills or hed not let them go on to long-ter- m high school. Hed found in one of his high schools only 16 per cent of the freshman class was able to read at sixth grade level; some could hardly read at all. HE announced then that eighth graders who were obviously not ready for high school would hereafter be kept behind another year. His remonstrance helped. That same school where only 18 per cent could read at a 6.5 this next level a year ago fall 95 per cent will be reading 6.5 or better. So his year-agwarning did help. But this one school did not improve reading skills adequately, so he decreed that some seven hundred of this year's eighth graders would be kept beSO o all-blac- k hind. If this example serves its purpose, it will result in improved reading and writing in the sixth, seventh and eight grades, even at the expense of some less essential studies. Supt. Briggs says. I did not just spring that as a surprise. I have been talking to the parents of these children all year." HIS FORTHRIGHTNESS has given some other educators courage. schoof Another superintendent, Alice Blair of Southside District 13, has also set a minimum reading score for admission to high school. Even though she set a lower minimum standard, 15 per cent of the thousand eighth graders in her district fed-u- p in-ci- ty failed to qualify. She says. Trust builds strong families. When family members trust each other, everyone knows they matter, even in the middle of an argument, according to the Idaho Mental Health Center. Trusting families are com- fortable with each other. They know that personal won't be raised at inappropriate times or in issues uncomfortable situations. And they know that everyone values each other in spite of personal disagreements. Such trust is built on four cornerstones: understand ing. support, respect, consideration. In your relations with other people, try to see life from the other persons shoes. Accept the individual as a person, even if he or she is not an adult. Children especially need this understanding. Support is equally important. One young woman, now a good cook, remembers how her mother supported her first cooking efforts. The mother let her stand on a stool to stir pudding for a special dinner. She was three, and thrilled to help. She knew her mother trusted her not to burn the pudding and she didn't. That support carried over to her adulthood. Today, she can risk a cooking failure. She knows it won't make her a failure. This kind of support has lasting effects. Another woman credits her responsibility to a small act which happened when she was four. She was alone in the house when it began to rain. She realized her parents closed the windows when it rained. So. she took a chair to each window and closed them. When mother returned, the daughter was praised. Shes remembered ever since how good it felt to be responsible. You need to work at building trust. It's not always easy to respect each person for his unique qualitites. Too often, parents catch themselves saying. Why can't you be a good student (or neat or stand up straight) like your brother? This erodes trust, it says, You SALE news aeacnai Claavon a THE .
