Research shows that a healthy deer herd with good habitat, can be reduced each year by as much as 40 per cent with no ill effect on future populations. Yet in most states the harvest is rarely more than 15 per cent. Gamebirds often have an annual mortality of 75 to 80 per cent weather hunted or not. Birds such as pheasants are far more affected by factors of feed, cover and weather than hunting. So hunting is a useful part of today's game management programs, and by teaming habitat improvement with careful regulated hunts we can make sure that hunters harvest only the surplus of game populations. Big reasons given by Swan g for the Bobcats' win over Roy last Thursday night was a cut Sky View High Schools Bobcats can virtually clinch third place in Region One standings with wins in their next two games. However, Coach Gary Swan is looking at one game at a time and that means all attention is rivoted on the Box Elder Bees who will travel to Smithfield Friday night to close out the Bobcats home schedule. Swan is confident the improved Bobcats can take the Bees and go into the Logan game in The Spectrum the following week with seasonending momentum. The Bobcats are about two 4-- by Paul Woodbury Conservation Officer Division of Wildlife Resources It seems like this time of the year and more and more every year we hear the g rumblings of the groups. Some people oppose hunting because they feel that wildlife should be preserved and allowed to increase. We hear a lot of this locally on our deer herds and pheasants. We know however, that this is not possible because wildlife is not a resource that can be stockpiled. According to literature put out by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, when hunters are not allowed to cleanly harvest annual over abundance of game, nature often takes over in a cruel and harsh way. When an oversized winter deer herd depleted all available food, slow starvation drastically reduces its number.
