Most valley waters have been stocked but midday fishing is very slow. However, anglers getting up early in the morning nr coming out just before darkness are having some success. The lakes and reser-rese- r- voirs are slow to poor with boat fishermen having better luck. The Logan and Blacksmith Fork Rivers are poor to fair, depending upon the skill of the fisherman. Flies and small spinners seem to be the best lures and red salmon eggs the best bait. ' build more runs in which to raise the fish. This will cost about $40,000. then we need a fish truck with which to transport the fish to our lake. This will cost $8,000. Then we need wages for hatchery personnel, fnr one man $7,000. Then we will need feed to make the fish grow, lets say we need 2.000 pounds at 19 cents a pound, that will cost $380. Add these all up and we find that it costs us 155.380 to raise and plant our fish in our lake. But we get 2.000 more fishermen, at $5 per license we increase our revenue hv $10,000. we find ourselves faced with putting up with lower catch rates nr else we shorten the fishing season, shorten the fishing day. cut the limit in half and so on. What we need to realize is that to keep up a high quality nf fishing success we must either pay fnr it nr be content to have it go down hill. .So Fishermen are constantly complaining that they don't have fishing like they did a few years ago. Hence the comments like I won't give my $5 to you guys this year." I'm going to Idaho and where they still have some real fishing." Lets look at this problem. Let's say we have a lake that naturally produces so many fish. These so many fish will only last up under the increasing fishing pressure we get, now-dav- s. for so long. The Fisheries section of Wildlife have set one fish per hour as a catch rate goal. This means that more fish are going to have to be put into our lake to keep up this catch rate. Now we say. well whals the problem, with the Increase in fishermen you get an increase in license revenues to plant the needed fish. But actually this is where the problem really starts, because revenue I- es ncreases mathematically while the cost of raising fish increases exponentially. As with our example of the lake. the extra fish for our lake means we have In To gel Smithfield Youths Rescue Trapped Trout I,ast week a number of trout were caught in an irrigation company's weed treating project and many were nearing suffocation when several local youths helped them nut. The fish were plared into fresh water and transported up the creek and replanted into the fresh wa- ter. The canal is treated every year fnr the plant growth and each year a few fish will work their way into the canal from the Itgan River nr Summit Creek.
