Ways to increase the useful life of wood construction materials are suggested by Vernon Burlison, University of Idaho extension forester. J Fungus decay is a principal cause of wood deterioration, Burlison says. The decay fungi secrete enzymes that convert wood into food for their growth and respira-lio- n. Burlison Crawl spaces are a good example of this. Cold water pipes that collect moisture in warm, humid weather are also culprits. The careless and pene-tratin- moisture. points out freshly cut lumber is wet and will decay if not properly dried. In general, the industry does a good job of drying lumber. However, an occasional supplier may ottor ar inforinr product. If structures. Bl'KLISON explains that fungus plants, some so small they are not easily seen, grow from seed spores that float in the air. Like other plants, fungi need moisture to survive. Therefore, if lumber is used in a dry situation where there is too little moisture for the decay fungi to live, wooden building material will last indefinitely. If ideal dry conditions are not possible, a poison can be used against the fungi. The poison is in the form of pressurized treatments with creosote, pentachlorophenol of other effective preservative solutions. The treatment allows lumber and posts to be used in outdoor situations. . The UI extension forester points out that creosote has a jjigh degree of permanence ind is very toxic to the fungi. g jHowever, it also has a odor and wood treat- with it is difficult to paint, therefore, creosote is not a Suitable preservative for Wood to be used in houses, Burlison advises. ' into the end grain of boards and keeps the wood wet for several days or even weeks can cause problems. That situation promotes fungus growth which in turn decreases the wood's water resistance. The trick is to protect lumber and construction joints from moisture penetration. Lumber itself is sometimes a source of infection A SOURCE of moisture in buildings that can become an unnoticed problem is condensation. Burlison says. It occurs in places not readily seen. use of bathtubs ur showers can also cause condensation trouble. Stings Dangerous To Allergic Person In a highly allergic individual, an insect sting can cause a host of dangerous and unpleasant reactions, even death, reminds the Idaho Medical Association. There may be general itching, skin rash, shortness of breath, weakness, low blood pressure, loss of consciousness, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart beat, choking, asthma, stuffy nose and other results. Regular injections to protect supersensitive people from future stings have been found to be effective in reducing the severity of the reaction. below the bandage, and the bandage should not produce a throbbing sensation. loosen the h.indage for a few seconds every 15 minutes. Apply an ice pack or cold cloths to the area; remove the stinger with tweezers. Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Mortality Data Listed The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife has compiled a 1973 eagle mortality and injury report from data gathered by the Division of Wildlife Resources and Bureau personnel. The report shows 58 golden eagles were found dead, while two were found wounded. Three dead and three wounded bald eagles were birds reported. Wounded were taken ' to the Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City for care. Causes of injuries and deaths were listed as: shot 17. electrocuted 17, and other (disease, road kills, 32. trapped, etc.) One arrest was reported for shooting a hawk. Division Law Enforcement Chief John Nagel noted that. Obviously, more raptor mortality occured than was reported. Hopefully, the public will realize the value of these birds and mortality by shooting will decline in the THE CITIZEN The electric sparks from a cat's body when the fur is under friction are probably caused by the peculiar dryness of the hair wh'ch is free from the oily substances common to the coats of PRESTON, IDAHO ' 'v.vA'.;' ' animals. - J We've g)t every AM on An effective treatment is administration of the drug, epinephrine, to counteract the sting, according to a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It is a good idea to seek out and destroy insect nests around the house, using aerosol spray.
