Show Letter To The Editor CLUBS PUBLIC NOTICE Mr. Shumway, Mrs. Hawkes NOTICE You're WrongOnPublicPower DEAR EDITOR: As a former resident of Franklin county, the trip back to "Zion" is always an eventful experience the family reunions, renewal of friendships and the opportunity to view the beauty and splendor of Cache Valley. I realized while reading the last issue of The Preston Citizen, that reading the letters to the editor is also an eventful experience that I had apparently overlooked on previous visits. As such, I would like to comment on the letters from Mrs. Ilawkes and Mr. Shumway. The letter from Mrs. Hawkes was well written. One could not help but admire the clarity of her writing style and the many cogent facts she brought to the atIn tention of the readers. fact, the quality of the letter was no less than you would expect to come from the State's Central Republican Committee or from George Hansen's staff. But certatin-l- y Mrs. Ilawkes wouldn't plagiarize! Unfortunately, the letter from Mr. Shumway lacked both style and factual base. If the content of Mr. Shum-wayletter reflects his competence to make judgements on economic matters, then he is certainly speaking out of The emotional apschool. peal of his letter which was ideas d based on and blatant misuse of economic concepts was not only totally repugnant to an economist but I would think an insult to the intelligence of: all Citizen readers except' those who share his ludicrous philosophy. SDace will not permit a. complete repair of the damage Mr. Shumway has inflected on my chosen profes sion, nevertheless, I would like to comment on his more politically significant blund ers. 1." Mr. Shumway implies that electrical power generated by public power plants are exempt from taxes. This is so. Public not necessarily nower or public sponsored power may not be liable for a host of slate ana wcai es. The tax exemption gen 's half-bake- getting taxable money from investors." Where do "our" taxes for construction come from? Some from Idahoans, certainly, but also from New Yorkers, Californians, etc. In fact, if we would compare the amount of taxes paid (both corporate and individual) by Idaho, Washington and Oregon with the remaining 47 states, it would seem that the latter group of states have built BPA just so the three Northwestern States could entice the industries away. Unfortunately, Cache Valley has been excluded from the industrialization progress of the northwestern region. 4. Mr. Shumway is distraught that ". . . BPA customers pay no federal taxes on their electrical bills." Not only that, but these same customers are exempt from paying a five to 10 percent rate of profit to private power companies as provided by the Federal government. I wonder how many businessmen and farmers in Franklin county would enjoy the opportunity of not having an allowance in their electrical bills for Federal taxes and private profits. 5. Lastly, I would like to know what special qualifications Mr. Shumway has that grants him the liberty to impugn the character and integrity of Federal employees. I respect Mr. Shumway's right to speak in favor of one OF HEARING PETITION FOR PROBATE OF WILL IN THE PROBATE COURT OF THE COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF IDAHO In the Matter ) of the Estate of ) N. RICHARD JENSEN ) Deceased ) Pursuant to an Order of the above entitled Court dated the 22nd day of October, 1968, Notice is hereby given that Ellsworth M. Jensen has filed herein a Petition for the Probate of the Last Will of N. Richard Jensen, deceased, and for the issuance to him of Letters Testamentary, and that the said Petition will be heard on the 11th day of November, 1988 at 10:00 o'clock A.M. in the Court room of the above entitled Court at Preston, Idaho, when and where any person may appear and contest the said Will and may file objections to the granting of the said petition. DATED this 22nd day of political candidate over an other. Likewise, I would not argue with his apparent choice of private over Feder al power development. How ever, I must object when he misused the tools and doctrines of my profession in an emotional appeal devoid of sound, if any, logic. Thank October October, 1968. Orval D.
