Show FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1974 THE SALT LAKE TIMES Misconception Exists in Minds Of Consumer, Say Utah Grocers A serious misconception exists into effect the inflationary in the minds of consumers when forces that are eating away at they say they know consumers the 20 gross margin such as are being ripped off or the retail increased wages, rent, materials, grocers are profiteering and tak- equipment, taxes, etc. In conclusion, Alder stated, ing unfair advantage by increasall retail food stores are faced ing the prices of products already on the grocers shelver, with these same problems. So-utio- ns according to Lawrence W. Alder. Executive Director of the Utah Retail Grocers Association. He said they then usually stae something to the effect that if a grocer purchases a product for a given amount, adds his normal markup and establishes his retail price, this established price should not change. This price they allege, hculd hod firm unti the grocer purchases new prod uct at a higher price. The nev product logically can bear a higher price but not the exiting product already on the grocers shelves. Mr. Alder stated, We can ap predate the consuming publics We frustration and concern. concerned and too, are frustrated over the very sericus inflationary problems confronting all of us. He went on to say, However, grocers are justified and are not profiteering when they advanue prires on goods already in sLodk for many reasons bu' mest impor'antly f:r their cash flow and the undercapitalization that would take place if they were not to advance theii prices. Here is an oversimplified that may help explain the problem. Today if a grocer buys one item of product X for $1.0C to be resold in his store here is what he is up against. The average gress margin before expenses in a retail food store will range from 14 to 20 depend ing on the type of operation (discount ps. full service, etc.) For ease of explanation well use 20 markup for this example The grocer must now mark product X for sale at $1.20, one dollar to pay his source of supply for the product and $.20 to cover his operating expenses such as rent, light, labor, insurance, etc. in addition to returning to thr grocer a reasonable profit for hir risk and investment. Lets now say one month later he sell? product X for $1.20. The time will vary from product to prod uct. Some products will turr over more quickly and some much slower. He now goes tc buy another product X to resel' and finds out he must pay hi source of supply not $1.00, bu $1.10. Unfortunately the grocer does not have $1.10 to pay for the new order of product X1 he has only $1.00. ($.20 has gone to pay other expenses, etc.) He now has two alternatives: (1) he could go to his source of suptc ply for capital and attempt arrange for additional financing to cover the increased cost of inventory. Its obvious no prudent investor will continue to advance funds on an indefinite basis because there appears to be o immediate end to the inflaeon. tionary course that we aravail(1) The only other option able to grocers is to advance the prices on the product in stock as price advance notices are received from the various sources of supply. If he doesnt do it he will be undercapitalized in a very short period of time and unable to buy new inventory for resale, particularly when you enlarge the above example to a $30,000 or $40,000 order that a grocer will regularly place with his source of supply. In addition, Alder stated, our above example docs not take ex-amol- e may vary slightly from organization to organization. But one way or another the problem must be dealt with or that organization will be in serious fi nancial trouble. An exhausLvt jearch into the retail margins ol .he various grocery stores in ousiness today will show that .hey have had to come to grips vith that very serious prob.em Sound, logical reasoning preludes any other conclusion. Being on the end cf the chan-le- l of distribution and the faci jhat every consumer buys foot .n a regular basis makes foot .etailers whipping boys for multitudes cf ills that we face ir. die price of food. We are oi he opinion that an informer press can do much to help, noi olve the problem, but bette. .nform the consumer so tha. tneir frustrations are not ventei n the wrong source. The above explanations wii .lDpefully clarify some of the misconceptions that exist. Page Nine Pedestrian Hazards Increase During Winter Months IiOQK px 3TbE BOQK Walking in winter is beset with a number of special hazards. Statistics compiled by the National Safety Council show that pedestrian-moto- r vehicle accidents reach their peak frequency in December and remain ligh throughout the winter. Darcie H. White, President, Utah Safety Council, notes that: the fact that the pedestrian traffic death rate is high in winter is an indication of special hazards, since motor vehicle mileage is lower than in other months. White concludes that many factors combine to make these months hazardous, and although t is not possible to give exact relative weights to these factors, they include: slippery surfaces BY DR. He cites a conspiracy of the prophets, a violation of the law and the profanation of holy things by the priests, a ruling for money on the part of the princes, and the oppression of the poor and needy by the people. The religious leaders had failed to distinguish between right and wrong. Our problem today, in large measure, is the fault of the clergy. There has not been a strong line of demarcation between good and evil. People have been led to follow the whims of desire instead of the demands of Scripture. To base actions on opinion, emotion, and interpretation is to revert to the times of the judges when every man did that which was right in his own eyes. So 20 years from now, if population was unchecked, it would be 400 as great as it was 20 years ago! The Mexican government has set in motion a program to reduce the high population growth through family planning education. President Luis Echeverria issued a call to the Church, medical profession and scientists and heads of family to cooperate in fostering responsible parenthood to restrain the population explosion which has become a. national problem. The President emphasized that in its plans to reduce population growth, the government of Mexico will respect the right of free will of families and no compulsory measures will be adopted. At a recent meeting presided over by President far-reachi- ng Echeverria, Mario Moya Palencia, Secretary of Government (Gobernacion) was elected to head the National Population Council which will implement the program. Our aim is to facilitate information and methods to heads of families so they can regulate the size of the family as they see fit," Echeverria said. He rejected any idea of sterilization based upon economic considerations.. Dr. Jorge Jimenez Cantu, Secretary of Public Health, said the department of health envisions a widespread campaign utilizing all available information media and health clinics to awaken the conscience of families with respect to this national problem. Responsible parenthood is identified with the desire and conviction to have children. who will be useful to themselves and to the community and properly educated for the demands which life makes on them," said Dr. Jimenez Cantu, who emphasized that the program is an integral part of the national development policy and not a substitute for it. The principle aim is to elevate the standard of living of our population and is based on absolute respect for freedom and human rights. It seeks to accelerate the development process and to correct the economic and social differences in various regions of the country," he said. Information on family planning and methods is being made available in all Social Security and Secretariat of Health clinics throughout the country free of charge to anyone requesting it. In addition, special teams of specialists are holding conferences on family planning at civic organizations throughout the country to explain the problem and free facilities being made available by the government. |
