Early this year slippage of the east bridge abutment was noted by highway engineers. Continuous monitoring has been main-tain- g since that time and no additional slippage has been detected. However, to insure future stability of the abutment, highway department officials believe some corrective measures are necessary. The highway department has developed two alternatives. One is to modify the existing slope by placing a thick layer of rock on the face of the slope. This heavy rock layer would act as a buttress against the slope and should prevent future slippage. The second alternative is to extend the east end of the bridge to more solid ground. That could create problems for traffic using the bridge and for that reason would be considered by the department as a less desirable HOW HUMIDITY AFFECTS COMFORT Miscellaneous Notices Consult clerk of the District Consult clerk of the District Court or the respective signers Court or the respective signers for further information. for further information. According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) the comforts of home are more so when the relative humidity indoors is between 30 and 60 percent. , An ASHRAE study shows that higher humidity deserves a warm welcome. They discovered that when the degree of dampness in a cool room is raised, people begin to feel warmer immediately. Low levels of humidity not only leave you out in the cold, they can also contribute to giving you a cold. Medical opinion attributes the increased incidence of respiratory complaints in winter to low indoor humidity. Dry1 air absorbs moisture from everything it en counters, including the membranes of the nose and throat. It makes the skin feel itchy and flaky too. In addition, relative humidity has been shown to have a significant effect on airborne infections. At 50 percent relative humidity, the greatest number are destroyed, and influenza viruses lose much of their virulence. This may come as shock to some, but more moisture in the air also means fewer static shocks when walking on carpets or handling paper and fabrics. A humidity percentage of at least 45 is needed to keep the sparks from flying from most things, and wool and some synthetics should be of-germ- s wetter still. Fortunately, you can put a damper on all these problems with a humidifier from so keep Westinghouse-an- d from feeling high and dry!
