Show Page Two FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 1974 Utah Power & Light to Suspend Promotional Advertising in '74 Hunts Are Over, But Work Continues Utah Power this is advertising which provides information to customers on ways to get the most out of the electric service, and provides news concerning the companys energy supply, steps being taken to pro tect the environment, and other information of interest and benefit to its customers. & Light Co. this advertising program week reevaled that it had, on January 1 suspended all advertising of a promotional nature (that which is intended to increase the use of electric energy. The firms president, . Allan Hunter, said, We took this action so that our company could continue to be in step with national energy conservation efforts and not because of any present or impending shortage of electricity in our service area. We feel that our promotion of the use of electric heating and security lighting has been in the best interests of our customers and useful in the national long term program for conservation of energy. Over 90 per cent of the electricity we deliver to our customers is generated using coal as the fuel, and coal is our nation's most abundant fuel with over 200 years' supply. However, we also believe that it is important for UP&L, as an energy company, to recognize and support national policies which call for suspension of advertising that encourages use of energy of any kind at this time. In connection with the announcement, James Shoemaker, the firms public affairs manager, said This is an extension of our announcement of last February, at which time we stopped all promotional advertising except for heating and security lighting. There is no change contemplated in the institutional of U Classified as Leading Researcher U The University of Utah has been classified as one of the leading research universities in the U.S. by the national Academy for Educational Development. According to the Washington based planning organization, the U is one of 36 public universities to achieve the classification. The category leading research universities was defined upon the basis of two criteria: award of 50 or more doctoral degrees and the receipt of in 1970-7more than $10 million in federal government support of academic science during the same period. The average enrollment of the 36 leading research universities was 26,400. The Academy is a pioneer in the field of long range planning for colleges and state systems of higher education. It was established in 1970 to help college and university officials improve the administration of the nations institution of higher 1, t BOB BREWSTER OUTDOOR BOTTOM j Mtrcury Saowmabffta Most snowmobiles are designed to carry bothapriver AND A PASSENGER. Institutes Church Rehab Program for Smokers The Human Resource Develop- ment Project Office of the U.S.A. The Navy will use the control books and films produced by the church in presenting the plan and will follow the outline and princples of the plan, which advocates total abstinence rather than gradual withdrawal. The first training session for implementers of the plan has been scheduled this month at Norfolk with Ernest H. Steed and Milo C. Sawvel, director and associate director of the Adventist Temperance Department. Captain P. J. Hartley, project manager of the Navy's Human Resource Development Project, m. that he had investigated carefully the basics of the five day plan and its effectiveness, and had decided to p'roceed in that direction in order to provide help to Navy personnel who wished to stop smoking. Mr. Steed reports that the U.S. Army is using some of the temperance materials, too. In Germany, he said, the Army is using 50 prints of an Adventist produced film on alcoholism. As the plan gets under way in CAAC centers across the nation, accurate records will be kept as to its effectiveness, and five day plan teams who are veterans at conducting the program will have opportunity to observe. The plan was first held in 1960 in Taunton, Mass., with one Adventist minister and doctor working together in its presentation. Originally it was intended for small groups of around 20 to 25 people, but in some areas as many as 3000 at a time have enrolled for sessions. Follow up alumni meetings have been encouraged, to help the stay off tobacco and these have proved effective. Those who successfully complete the plan breaking the habit, receive small lapel pins with the initials ID on them,' meaning I Dont Smoke. Such pins are now beginning to show up all over the world. ex-smok- ers Doctor in the Kitchen by Laurence M. Hursh, M.D. Consultant, National Dairy Council Farmers Tax Guide Available from IRS Internal Revenue Services offices and county agents, it was announced this week. Distributed primarily to aid farmers in completing their tax returns the pamphlet shows by example how to complete the Form 1040 and accompanying schedules. The publication also lists important tax dates for farmers as a handy reference for use in the year. Written in easy to understand language, the tax guide contains many examples of how to report farming transactions for federal income tax purposes, as well as many useful hints on signed the agreement. Captain U. S. Hartley explained Navy has signed an agreement with the Temperance Department of the Seventh Day Adventist Church that will offer help to its personnel who want to kick the smoking habit. The agreemen enables the Counseling and Assistance Centers (CAAC) of the Navy to take over and operate the five day plan to stop smoking developed by the Adventists. The plan, which involves five successive evenings of group therapy, has proved more than 75 percent effective in enabling people to stop smoking, even chain smokers. It has been held in more than 100 countries and is a continuing community service of most of the hospitals operated by the church in the The 1974 edition of Farmers Tax Guide, IRS publication 25, is now available free from the THE SNOWMOBIlEJgW MERCURY The winter season is not slack for Division of Wildlife Resource personnel, says Homer Stapley, the assistant game management chief. It is this time that a full assessment of the past seasons activities, including hunting and fishing, can be made and plans can be formulated for the future. The vast volume of data collected during the past year is being critically analyzed, and will aid in objective management of the wildlife resources. Data analyzed includes productivity of different species, a population trend, habitat quality and a review of land use programs as they may affect wildlife in the future. Many land use programs are adverse to wildlife, and it is the responsibility of the Division to offset those programs by developing new ones, he said. Harvest questionnaires are also being studied. Licensed hunters who receive questionnaires are urged to return them to the Division because they are a necessary tool in carrying out management activities. Information regarding wildlife species will continue to be collected in the winter, migration habits, where and how well wildlife are wintering and their effect on the winter range. Certain species will be relocated into acres of suitable habitat which can support additional animals. These species include Hungarian and chukar partridge and pheasants and turkey. Much time is spent contending with wildlife damage problems in the state. Deer get into private haystacks, orchards and ornamental shrubs, particularly on the Wasatch Front and Division personnel must translocate the animals to areas where they do no harm. THE SALT LAKE TIMES YOUR PERSONAL ENERGY CRISIS If youre overweight, you have a personal energy crisis but in reverse. Instead of having too little energy available, you have too much. Hows that, you say? It is quite simple. You are eating more than you need. So your body stores the excess energy from your food as body fat. Just the opposite of societys need for more energy fuels than seem to be available, youve been stashing energy away and then not using it. So you are fat! Gasoline I read not long ago of a man who claimed he had a home process for making high octane gasoline in his garage from all kinds of garbage, grass clippings, and other waste stuff. As long as it was organic in origin, he ground it up into some kind of a soup, then put the mix through a refinery process and got gasoline he could use in his car. And recently, University of Illinois scientists found a profitable way to convert garbage into methane gas which can be used for fuel. I mention this here because it is true that all living matter, animal or plant, oilers energy. Thus we should realize that our food truly is a source of energy, as well as of nutrients we must have regularly for maintenance and repair of our bodies. And we simply should not abuse our bodies by feeding ourselves more than we need. Another way of making the point is to remind ourselves that Home-mad- e there surely is an energy crisis in many parts of the world where they do not have enough food. Even among Americans who dont have enough to eat. Whatever you do this winter, dont subscribe to the idea that you need more food to keep you warm just because youve turned your thermostat down in response to pleas to save energy. In fact and this may astonish you it takes more calories to keep cool in the summer than to keep warm in the winter. Tests With Soldiers When I was in charge of U.S. Army nutrition research, we found this to be true through tests with soldiers based from the Equator to the Arctic Poles. The reason is, in winter we wear clothes sufficient to make us comfortable. But in hot weather, it takes extra energy just to keep you cool, even though you probably are wearing lighter clothes. Air conditioning, of course, helps. But it does so only by using elec- trical energy. You may want to don a sweater more often this winter. It will be good if you exercise more. Exercise for its own sake, or chores around the house will do. And walk more, rather than ride. I cant prove it, of course. But I believe if most Americans only ate the amount of food that is good for them, perhaps there would be a direct saving of food energy simply because less food would then be distributed for our misuse. |
