Lewis AND Labor Telethon for Charity Day YOUR CAR Utah's American Cancer Society YOU Starts 2nd Smoke Stoppers Clinic Anyone .who is interesting in quitting the smoking habit is urged to register now for the second Smoke Stoppers Clinic, sponsored by the Utah Division of the American Cancer Society. This series of eight meetings will be held weekly for four weeks, starting Monday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Registration forms may be obtained at 610 East South Temple or by calling There is a charge of $1 per person. A volunteer physician who will conduct is an the clinic. The first Smoke Stoppers series, led by Dr. Gilbert Wright Salt Lake County I. Q. (I Quit) Chairman for the Utah Division, was completed last week. We know its not easy to stop smoking. Of the 19 people who gathered for the first session, ten determined Regulars were able to follow through to the end of the series. Of those, two have not smoked for over two weeks and a third has been off cigarettes for nearly a week. While others have made drastic cutbacks, it is ntoable that unusual pressures will drive some of the people to send up smoke signals again. This is not abnormal at all we are very much encouraged with the results, thus far, of this pilot group. On the first day of the clinic these people smoked a total of 220 cigarettes, and on the last day they had cut down to a total of 81. He said that this first group elected to continue meeting each week, 322-043- 1. ex-smok- er with an appointed leader of its own, with the hope of helping each other to quit smoking per- manently. The clinics are designed to uncover reasons why the person smokes and then to determine the most effective and direct method of quiting. A pathologist a psychologist, a physician and laymen who were all former smokers talked to the group at various times to offer suggestions and ideas they had found helpful in overcoming a smoking habit. Labor Day September 3, 1973 Labor Day is a unique holiday, observed as a national holiday only in the United States , The day was established by national law as a salute to the working person , and to Americans the holiday heralds a change in life style as it usually marks the end of vacation season , the start of another school year, and a seasonal change . These words from The Living Bible refer to work, What does one really get from hard work? I have thought about this in connection with all the various kinds of work God has given to mankind. Everything is appropriate in its own time. But though God has planted eternity in the hearts of men, even so, man cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end. They stand for Society of Automotive Engineers, a technical society formed in 1905 and now consistng of over 30,000 professional engineers from all the branches of the industry. They work independently, not representing their companies or affiliations to develop standards and specifications for auto components and products like headlights, brake fluid, motor oil and brake linings. These standards are voluntary many of them goals for a manufacturer to work toward when making a particular component. The standards are reviewed each year and updated when the technology in a given area has advanced. The SAE also assists the government, primarily the Department of Transportation, by providing technical expertise and advice. A new activity undertaken by SAE within the past year is its Vehicle Research Institute. Under the Societys management, fundamental research projects are being conducted at uinversi-tie- s and research centers. Presently, the emphasis is on highway safety, although research projects have been conducted in other areas and the program is expanding. One new area is the noise. The Vehicle Research Institute provides a unique opportunity for industry and government to work together in funding basic studies. This eliminates duplication of effort and funding, while at the same time developing a better common understanding of engineering problems and solutions. This activity is in tune with President Nixons message on science and technology to the Congress on March The 16, 1973, when he said, to a new progress we seek looks partnership in science and techone which brings tonology gether the federal government and private enterprise. As reflected in its meetings, publications and committees the SAE and its members are concerned today with problems of energy shortage, vehicle emissions, highway safety, noise, the conservation of natural resource and mass transportation as well as the bread and butter prob- lems of designing more efficient and more effective motor vehicle parts and components. The consumer derives the ultimate benefit from this scientific research because these efforts are aimed at proviidng a safer, more efficiently operating car. first, there is nothing better for a man than to be happy and to enjoy himself as long as he can; and second, that he should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of his labors, for these are gifts from God. . . . We fee disappointed that God has not dealt with us in spiritual matters exactly as He has dealt with someone we know or with some character in the Bible. The Apostle Paul had a strange and dramatic con( Christians mistake of version. Many men and women, as they come Into the saving knowledge of Christ, have a very quiet experience. But that does not mean that they are less born again than was Paul. It is a good thing that God does not deal with all of us in the same fashion. We have different temperaments and dispositions, and God deals with us on the basis of what is best for us. He does not expect us to be alike; why should we expect Him to deal with all of us in the same fashion ? Before Elijah was taken up to Heaven in the chariot of fire, he said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee" (II 1 Rings 2:91 Elisha answered. I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me That was a good prayer Elisha did not ask for Elijahs style of preaching He did not ask for Elijah's disposition and temperament. He did not even ask for Elijahs power. He asked for a double portion of the Spirit God gives to His children the gifts they shall need in the place of service He has for them. Elijah was dominated by the Spirit of God. That Spirit took Elijahs gifts and used them powerfully. But the same Spirit took Elishas gifts, different as they were, and used them no less powerAs Christians, we fully. should seek to be rich in Divine grace and humbly obedient to God. We should not seek to imitate someone else, however godly he may be. We should seek the guidance and power of Gods Spirit for our own lives and should trust Him to deal with each of us in the way that Is best for us and for His cause.
