Show Page Two FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 1973 The Home Eye Test: First Vision Check for the Preschoolers Brick Masonry Class Begins at Utah Tech The paradox about good eye care is that we readily appreciate its value, but not always what it involves. On the one hand we count on good eyesight for ourselves and our children; yet, as long as the eyes appear to be healthy, we're not always inclined to look for problems. A common enough failing but as it concerns eye care, it can be a risky practice. Take your youngster's eyes. As long as they look normal and he's not rubbing them a lot or squinting or frowning excessively, or giving you some other obvious sign of trouble, it might not occur to you that he could still have a vision problem. Your youngster is not likely to tell you either. After all, if he sees things blurred or double thats probably the way hes seen them all his life. So, without any point of comparison, how is he to know they should look differently? The solution, recommends the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness, is for your child to have a professional eye examination by the time he is three or four years old. The earlier it is done, the better the chances for detecting and correcting a vision problem in its initial stage before serious consequences develop. Now, to encourage early eye care the Society is offering a Home Eye Test so that parents can give their children an initial vision screening in their own home. Students here worked hard to raise funds for CARE, the international relief and development agency and they have made a vital contribution to the reduction of illiteracy in Asia, Africa and in Latin America. Elemenatry, junior and senior high school students provided some of the funds, when added to contributions from other concerned citizens, enabled CARE, through its shared Partnership Development Programs with the host governments, to construct last year 504 primary schools, 17 secondary schools, 330 community water systems and wells, 97 nutrition centers and to provide tools, seeds and vocational equipment. In addition American students helped to provide nutritious supplementary meals to over 24 million school aged and pre school children which the agency feeds regularly overseas. School fund raising programs for CARE in Nevada and Utah were varied and clever. At one high school, students held a two day Ugliest Man on Campus contest in which students voted for their favorite candidate with coins to be donated to CARE. Through their effort, refugees and war orphans in Vietnam received vital supplies through the agency Vietnam Relief Fund. In another high school students held a Hunger Dinner in the conference hail, one of the The classical temples, such as the Byodoin with contrasts world, Temple below, in the same city. The event was so successful that CARE was able to feed nearly 27,000 hungry children in Liberia and Indonesia. Students at another school put put hearts in their soles for CARE by conducting a 20 mile hike in which participants obtained monetary pledges from sponsors for each mile completed. The proceeds were applied to CAREs porgrams to improve the nutritional level and agricultural productivity in India.
