As New Zealand is an acknowledged leader in the development of ferro cement boats, the FAO decided that it would be appropriate to meet there. Ferro' cement hulls are mad on multiple layers of mesh and d strengthened with steel, with concrete shaoed andim-pregnaet- around pipe iron frames. Experiments with this type of construction were tried some yearr ago but has gained acceptance only in the last decide. An Auckland civil engineer founded th? ferro cement hull construction a little over 12 years ago. Todav many New Zealanders build their own hulls and there are a least three firms building them commercially. One company has about 50 hulls to its credit and its overseas orders include sever 40' yachts and two 54' leisure yachts. Not only is ferro cement considerably cheaoer than conventional materials it offers other advantages as well: a large 55' hull may be constructed in half the time it takes to build timber hull; it has no joints; the only maintenance is painting and it has an indefinite life. It is alsr resistant to corrosion and fire and has good strength to weight ratios. Because of the relatively high weight factor, however the decks and cabins of these boats are usually built of timber covered with fiberglass. The only real weakness is its susceptibility to the punch holing. Research, however, indicates that this will be overcome by using an improved form of mesh and by increasing the thickness of the hulls. Scientists Report Renewed Hope For Cancer Vaccine United Van Lines Installs Toll Free Number for Aid A possible step toward some chemical vaccine against cancer is being worked on at the Salk Institute in San Diego. Unlike most vaccines, it is a synthetic chemical, constructed to resemble a chemical on the surfaces of cancer cells. In the initial experiments, this chemical stimulated enough immunity to delay the development of tumors n mice that were given cancer. It has generally ben thought hat vaccination against cancer would not be practical, since here are so many kinds of tumors. A different vaccine would oe necessary to protect against ach type. However, it was reported in the last few years that virtually all tumor cells have on heir surfaces a chemical struc-ur- e that reacts in laboratory .ests with a certain plant protein, formal cells also have this structure, but only during a certain stage of cell division. Dr. W. Thomas Shier decided hat a vaccine based on that structure might be able to stim-llat- e the immune system to respond all tumor cells without dong much harm to normal cells. He first had to analyze the key 'arts of the chemical and then ynthesize a replica. He injected mice with this substance and "hen later injected them with the cancer cells or a cancer causing :hemical. The results were that he development of tumors was considerably delayed, in most cases by comparison with the appearance of tumors in control mice not given the vaccine and :hree different tests revealed no marked adverse effect or normal United Van Lines, Inc., has expanded its Telephone Information Service to allow customers to call Uniteds World Headfor information quarters toll-fre- e about a specific household goods move, P. B. Goelz, vice president and general manager, announc- NEW ed. The toll-fre- e telephone service Wide Area employing Telephone (WATS) lines and dubbed Hotline, is the first established by a major, worldwide moving company to permit its customers to inquire about the movement of their belongings. Under the direction of United's Moving Consultant, Bette Malone, the service was created on a limited basis last fall. At that time, persons were invited to call toll-fre- e for information about an impending move, for various consumer brochures and literature about moving or for details about the city, state or foreign country to which the caller was moving. Under the expanded program, which was effective Jan. 15, persons may still seek moving information, but can also obtain information about the location of their shipment enroute, expected delivery date or, as one United executive put it, can let us know he was satisfied with the way we handled the move. Persons calling the information service will be asked what facts they require. In the event they are seeking a booklet, it will be mailed within 24 hours of the request. If they need specific details about a shipment, a representative of the appropriin-bou- nd Happy Face Marigold, a bronze medal winner in the 1973 All- - ' America Selections, belongs to a class of marigolds popularly known as hedging marigolds, owing to their neat, uniform habit of growth. Happy Face has deep golden-yelloflowers measuring up to 4 inches across on 26 inch plants. At its best in a border, Happy Face is also useful as a container plant, and makes a beautiful cut flower for indoor arrangements, as shown here. w, nitely a plus as far as a solid consumer service is concerned, he asserted. It seems that there is no communications problem before the customers belongings are loaded onto the van, he continued. But after the van leaves the customers home, there is sometimes a certain anxiety on the cells. Under the original service, nearly 2500 persons called United to inquire about moving last year. For the most part, they were planning a move and wanted tips on how to make it go smoothly.
