Show Poge Twelve Bowhunters Increase in Numbers As Successful Hunters Love Sport With increased gun pressure in the west, more and more hunters are turning to the bow for uncrowded sport. State game management agencies in the Rocky Mountain area offer liberal bow seasons to archers. Many of the pre and post season hunts have been added to the state's hunting calendar by game managers interested in selling more hunting licenses without risking possible over harvest of game. In turn, they are providing quality hunting for more sportsmen, both residents and nonresidents. Many private landowners who closed their land to rifle hunters in recent years, allow bow hunting. Timbered, brushy bottomland, ideal hangouts for deer and bow hunters alike, have been opened to archers in many areas. Such are as were held off limits to rifle hunters because the limited field of vision in such thick growth was considered hazardous to livestock, especially when it was near farm buildings and pastures. This reasonable precaution by the landowners has led to the growth of a number of Bow Hunting Only signs. Many of these notices have replaced No Hunting posters, to the de- light of hunters and game man- agement agencies alike. Bow hunting has been popular in east and west coast states for the past 20 years. The population zoom in the big cities, coupled with shrinking habitat, were the leading factors responsible for the sportss growth. Archers can hunt small areas. Bow hunting is considered safer than rifle hunting, and the harvest of big and small game is minimal. As the population increased in the midwestern cities, bow hunting in this part of the country also grew as a sport. In the last ten years the sport has taken hold in Utah. Most important is the fact that compared to eastern, western and mid-wecenters, the Rocky Mountain states are sparsely populated. It stands to reason that fewer hunters plus abundant game populations will add up to higher rates st of hunter success. In 1970 THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, JULY 14, 1972 hunting license holders in Utah numbered 207,629. Compare this to 1 million license holders for Pennsylvania, 918 175 for Michigan, 757,840 foi California 725,305 for New York Aside from the fact that there is less competition for greatci numbers of animals in the Rock ies, these states are also blesscc with a greater variety of gam species. Mule deer, elk and antelope are chief targets for arch ers. But the bow hunter wh craves even more variety anc challenge can test his skill or big horn sheep, black bear anc moose. Then there is a good se lection of small game, rabbits coyotes, fox and bobcats. Utah is a likely candidate for the best mule deer hunting ir the west. All game species car be taken with a bow. Only game fish cannot be taken. Special hunts for archers are set up for deer and elk only. In 1968, 14,345 deer archery permits wer esold. In 1969,15,040. and in 1970 17,047. In 1970 per ccntage of archers bagging deer Best areas arc the Uinta mountains, Salt Lake Valley, Strawberry valley and the Kamas area and best elk hunting in the state for residents is on the Cache and Manti Mountains. Good Reviews for Anything Goes Cole Porters madcap musical of the 1030s, Anything Goes now being presented by the University of Utah Theatre Players at the Lagoon Opera House was opened last week to the praise of local reviewers. It has a wacky assortment of characters to go along with Porters righly hit tunes, and Lagoon impressario Robert Hyde Wilson has adroitly cast the musical with a bright and talented cast. Ogdens reviewer labels the musical comedy top quality entertainment and notes that the professionalism and talent of veteran thespians Stanley Rus-so- n and Anne Rowe was obvious again, maintaining the record they have established in past performances. The snappy dances and lively tunes bring the shop to the top. The production is an excellent performance and features the outstanding cast. The production continues at the Lagoon Opera House Tuesdays through Fridays at 8:30 and Saturdays at 7 and 9 p.m. to July Willie Wise Inks Stars Contract 364-771- 7.
