Show Page Five Henderson Claims Drinking Effects Can Be Halted By Those Willing to Seek Help By Cecil Carle If a member of your family, or a dear friend or a is an alcoholic, he is not alone. There are 9,000,000 like him. If you, yourself, detect in your drinking behavior an abuse of alcohol that is affecting any part of your life on a continuing basis, you are not morally weak, but your life is controlled by a disease that the American Medical Association calls the greatest of all drug abuses. Alcoholism is curable, but the ravage of its effect on the victim and on others can be arrested through abstinence. Help can be had by visiting the office of the Utah Alcoholism Foundation, 2875 So. Main, or the Utah State Division of Alcoholism and Drugs. The Utah Alcoholism Foundation reveals some astounding facts about the. disease. It is estimated that 80,000,000 United States citizens drink alcoholic beverages. Actually six of every 10 adults use alcohol. Only one outo f 12 of them becomes alcoco-wor- ker holics. This natoin is populated by alcoholics. The state of Utah has 29,300 alcoholics and the cost per alcoholic is $1,200, so the total cost to the state of Utah for alcoholism is $35,160,-000.00. How many of them have done or are doing anything about the disease which can never get better, only worse? The most successful efforts in all history in showing the way to necessary total abstinence is Alcoholic Anonymous. A recent article in a medical journal has credited AA with doing more to relieve alcoholism than all doctors, clergy and jurists in the ntaion. Yet only nearly 380,000 of those 9,000,00 problem drinkers are in AA learning how to avoid the incessant poisoning of themselves. Something about the disease, and what it does to society and individuals and about practicing alcoholics can be learned from a few facts gleaned from many studies surveys. Alcoholics are more susceptito heart ble than blood pressure, diattacks, high abetes and of course cirrhosis of the liver. By contrast, there are only a half million known tuberculosis sufferers in the United States. Five per cent of all employed males have a serious drinking problem and forty percent of all family court problems are the result of abuse of booze. More than 40 per cent of all delinquent youth come from homes where there is an alcoholic problem. Where do the alcoholics come from? Surveys show that half of all those millions either attended or graduated from college, 87 per cent completed high school, only 13 per cent dropped out before high cs school. Forty five per cent are employed in professions or management, 30 per cent manual labor and 25 per cent are in white collar jobs. Only 3 per cent of our alcoholics are on any Skid Row. Actually only a fourth of all Skid Row derelicts are alcoholics, the rest being merely social misfits. In the state of Utah alcoholism has increased 182 per cent since 1965.
