Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, MAY 12, 1972 Union Pacific Avards Population Growth in Utah is Expected to Exceed Average Over the next twenty years, Utah is expected to experience a population growth somewhat greater than that of the nation as a whole. This was the conclusion reached by Utah Foundation, the private research organization, in an analysis of population trends. According to the Foundation, recent projections by the U. S. Census Bureau indicate that Utahs population is expected to increase between 32 and 55 per cent by 1990. Population growth for the nation as a whole, on the other hand, is estimated at 23 to 32 per cent by 1990. Following is a summary of the high and low population projections for Utah in the years ahead. The report emphasizes that no one can predict the population growth with absolute certainty. This fact was demonstrated during the 1960s when an unexpected decline in birth rates had thrown off the projections of most demographers. In addition, shifting migration patterns resulting from changing economic conditions, the availability of land, social and religious influand ences, job opportunities, water supply may have a pronounced effect on the population growth of a state or region. Foundation analysts point out that during the past three year? fertility and birthrates in Utah have been rising while rates for the U.S. have been declining. The Census Bureau population projections, however, are based on the assumption that the ratio of each states fertility rate to the nation during the 1960 to 1970 decade would continue in the projection period. Thus if the Utah experience of the past 3 years should continue, the population projections for Utah may prove to be conservative. In addition to natural increase (excess of births over deaths), the other major determinant of population growth is migration. Utah has fluctuated between the to period perods of of Although Utah out-migrati- on on. Utah Scholarships experienced a net during the 1960-7- 0 decade there is some evidence that there has been a recent reversal of this trend. In each of the past two years, actual enrollment in Utah public schools has been greater than anticipated, indicating that some new may be taking place. The Foundation analysis observes that the recent increase in Utahs birth rate along with the apparent shift in migration patterns is causing some concern for social and economic planners in Utah. These changes are of special importance to those dealing with education and public school matters, since they may be a harbinger of a new wave of school enrollment increases in the late 1970s. out-migrati- ion on Winners of the $5400 Union Pacific Scholarships have been chosen, said Glenn Baird, supervisor Youth Program at the Utah State University Extension.
