Throughout the state of Utah the median value of owner occupied single family homes in 1970 was $16,800, an amount nearly equal to the U.S. median of $17,000. Median home values ranged from a high of $35,100 in Hawaii to a low of $10,500 in Arkansas. In the Mountain states the median value was $16,300. Within Utah, the report notes that the most expensive housing was found in Holladay, an unincorporated suburban community in Salt Lake County) and where the median value of owner occupied single family homes was $26,000. The lowest median values were listed for Piute of 0. $7,300 and Juab County of $7,-80- According to the report, the value extremes in Utah housing are not as great as they are nationwide. Only 14 per cent ot the owner occupied, one family homes in Utah for example are valued below $10,000, compared with 22 per cent for the nation as a whole. At the other end of the scale only 6 per cent of the Utah families live in homes of $35,000 or more, compared with 10 per cent for the nation. The study notes, however, that there still is considerable BY DIANE WEILENMANN variation within Utah. Most of the lower prices homes in Utah are located in the rural areas of the state. Of these 65.7 per cent were owner occupied. Although Utah is well above the national average in the proportion of home owners, the relative advantage has been reduced somewhat during the past decade. According to the Foundation study, nearly 69 per cent of the total housing units in Utah during 1970 were occupied by the owner. This compares with an owner occupancy rate of 62 per cent for the nation as a whole. In 1960 about 71.7 per cent of all housing units in Utah were owner occupied, compared with 61.9 per cent for the entire nation. In other words, the proportion of homeowners in Utah now is about 10 per cent greater than the national average. Ten years ago, the relative advantage for Utah was 16 per cent. During 1970 Utah ranked 8th among the fifty states in the proportion of housing units which are owner occupied. In 1960 Utah ranked 3rd by this measure. able commodity. What care we take about feeding the lucky body! Which of us does as much for this mind? What epuses the difference? Is the body so much the more important of the two? What does the mind crave? How does it hunger? Our minds are hungry for greater thoughts when they begin to rerun negative incidents. The only cure for bad thoughts is crowding them out with ample servings of Emerson in straight doses, huge helpings of Psalms (try 24 and 91) and washing them down with Plato and Homer. Great minds, who live forever because they wrote truth. Human nature always intends big things but the best intentions have no merit, the smallest effort is more valued than the greatest intention. Perhaps a good rule of thumb would be to spend equal amounts of time on our tummys as our thoughts. Note how long you spend at supper; and spend an equal amount of time with a Utah Senator Frank E. Transient Room Tax is the Key for Utah Development Tourism, the fastest growing industry in Utah, will get a big boost this year with the planned full use of the Transient Room Tax. The Room Tax Statute, passed by the 1965 Legislature, lets motels, hotels or anyone renting for 30 days or les, put a 1 k per cent tax on the accommodation. The tax money is then used to promote the more than $200 million travel industry in the state through the Utah Travel Council and various convention bureaus. Heres how it works: Travel Council, for instance, has split the state up into nine regions, with each one offering a distinctive and unique attraction of visitors. Each region has a travel committee that determines what it would cost to promote their region for the year. The committee submits its proposals to the Travel Council and the Council matches the money put up by the regions with the revenue of the Room Tax. For example, if the Golden Spike Empire (Box Elder, Davis, Morgan and Weber counties) plans to spend $34,000 this year for promotion the Utah Travel Council can provide half from the Room Tax money. "The tax has proved to be a big asset to the travel industry in the state, said Lee Jorgensen, director of the Travel Council. "The plan is very simple and when all the counties in the state elect to use the tax it will give Utah an excellent tool in promoting the travel industry. Regional proposals this year are expected to exceed $150,000 though the Travel Council budget has a $100,000 ceiling. In "The Milky Way and Beyond, constellations and the positions of the brighter nebulae, star clusters and galaxies will be identified.
