Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES Hints for Childrens to School Safety Going vacaof While weeks summer tion remain prior to the start of the new school year, parents who have youngsters entering school for the first time this fall are urged to give their safety consideration now. The Utah Safety Council is urging parents whose children will be walking to and from school to see to it that youngsters are taught how to get there promptly and safely. The Utah Safety Council is making the following recommendations. Before school opens, children should be carefully taught how to recognize standard traffic signals and how to obey them. If special pedestrian signals are used, they should understand these too. Parents should make certain their youngsters know the way to school. Walk through the route with them several times before school starts or for the first few days of school. Many schools have student patrols at street intersections. Children should understand the patrols are there to help them and that they are to follow the directions of the patrol or crossing guard. Streets should be crossed only in marked crosswalks or at intersections in line with sidewalks. Impress upon children that moving cars cannot stop immediately, so they must look right and left for oncoming cars and check cross streets for the turning cars. Dont cross the street. Go directly to the opposite side with out loitering in the street to call or visit with friends. Page Nine FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 1971 y While waiting to cross a street keep on or behind the curb. Do not stand in any part of the street. Never run into it suddenly for any reason. Children should be taught not to fear the street or vehicles but to be self reliant and confident. When he has determined the proper time to cross the street he should do so without hesitation. He should understand that he is never to accept gifts or offers of rides from strangers. If parents themselves always followed the safe walking rules their children would learn them much better. Nearly 10,000 full blooded aborigines still live in Western Australia, more than half in the tropic north, where they labor as iron miners, irrigation work-e- s and cowboys. Although forests blanket two thirds of its land, Finland sometimes imports wood from Russia and Sweden to feed its many sawmills and paper plants.
