Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES In NASA Budget Bennett Opposes Cut Sen. Wallace P. Bennett in a Senate speech last week defended the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations program and said spin-o- ff benefits and technological gains from the U.S. space effort justify its continuation. The Senators speech came as debate continued in the Senate over NASAs fiscal 1972 program, with a group of Senators attempting to cut back funding for the agency. NASA is headed by Dr. James C. Fletcher, former president of the University of Utah. Sen. Bennett said, A strong space program is esential to this countrys continued technological development. In addition to this salient fact, I am convinced the type of program being developed by NASA is one which provides for the greatest utilization of funds to be authorized. The The Utahn contiuned, space shuttle concept now being pushed forward is based on a reusable system to make possible the reducing of payload launch costs from the current $1000 to about $100 per pound. The overall space shuttle program can be developed for nearly $12.8 billion, most of which will be reclaimed through the savings that will result from a greater use of existing satellites and the components of the space shuttle system. Through the use of the system it will be possible to retrieve unmanned satellites that fail to function properly presently have to be written off. The Senator added, It should also be noted that the space shuttle will not be used exclusively for NASA, but will become a lunching pad for all of this nations payloads in science, navigation, communication, earth resources, both military and civilian. 1 am convinced it is in the FRIDAY, JULY 23, 1971 RHYME OF THE NOT-SO-ANCIE- Insurance Firm Conducts Research Tests On Bumpers Car of a arent NT MARINER fun and There is a Crestliner mariner Who always seems to know That pollution makes seas barrener; So he spares the H2O. This process is believed to have taken place deep in the earth. The weights of both gem and industrial diamonds are expressed in metric carats. One carafe equals one what they bumpers used to be, nor are they what they should be. These are the conclusions reached by Dr. Nathaniel H. Pulling as a result of more than a full year of testing variety of old, new and experimental car bumper systems. Dr. Pulling, automotive project director for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, conducts his tests at the firms research center in Hopkinton, Mass. In each test a bumper is mounted to a deceleration sled (automotive crash simulator) which is weighted like a standard automobile (3500 pounds). The bumper is then run down the track at speeds up to five miles per hour and smashed into a If your memory stretches back far enough, you might recall something called a depression plant.
