Development of a financially feasible conversion process will have tremendous impact on the Utah economy because about one eighth of the worlds known supply of volatile bituminous coal is located within 300 miles of Salt Lake City. Deposits in Carbon, Emery and Kane counties are among the largest in the world. Project engineers will begin immediately to redesign existing campus facilities for a tenfold increase in capacity and a round ttie clock operating schedule. Dr. Hill said a large part of the $100,-00- 0 renovation will probably be contracted to local companies. The new staffers primary responsibility will center on the full time operation of a hydrogeneration reactor used for cracking or breaking down the molecules in pulverized coal particles. The cracking process is the key to unlocking liquid deposits in high volatile bituminous coal, and sophistication of that step will be the thrust of the new research effort. Emphasis on the exploitation of coal was dramatized nationally in 1962 with the establishment of the Office of Coal Research. Since then financial support for coal research has risen steadily. Dr. Hill attributes that increase to awareness by government officials of Americas dwindling liquid petroleum reserves. In the last five years the ratio of annual petroleum consumption to known reserves in the U.S. has decreased by nearly 25 By early 1971 Public, Private Schools There are 299,412 students enrolled in Utahs public schools compared to 5,208 in the private schools.
