To Provide Oil for the Nation Although all energy sources are expected to show vigorous growth between now and 1980, petroleum will continue to supply nearly three fourths of the nations total needs, according to a new study quoted in Oil Facts. The study, Outlook for Energy in the United States, was published by the Chase Manhattan Bank. The bank expects markets for coal, water power and nuclear energy to expand rapidly as the nations energy demand grows, but it says oil and natural gas will, continue to carry most of the load. Besides meeting current demands, the bank points out that the petroleum industry must constantly search for additional reserves for future use. Good opportunities exist for finding more oil and gas in the United States and its offshore waters, according to the bank study, but tremendous amounts of money must be spent to find these potential reserves. The size of that expenditure will depend on the industry receiving adequate incentive to take the risks involved. To provide the energy the nation needs, the energy industries must generate from their operations tremendous amounts of capital, and obviously, if they are to do that, price must not only be adequate in relation to costs but it must also be flexible free to move up and down as the supply-deman- d relationship dictates. Have Children in the 30's Women who have children in their 20s have committed themselves to a poor life plan and are depriving v themselves and their husbands emotionally and materially, a marriage expert has declared. Author Morton Hunt said in a recent issue of Bed-boo- k magazine that years of research in love and marriage have convinced him that it would be far better for women to wait at least a decade to start their families. He maintained that the belief women should have children while they are young is a myth that once made sense and served an important function in American life but now. works against a familys best interests. Mr. Hunt argued that young couples are neither emotionally nor financially ready for children and often bring forth children not for themselves but for other people. Relatives, neighbors and friends all exert subtle Utah Doctor Helps Tall Women Become Shorter LETTERS TO Tall women have great views at parades. They can clean the top shelves of their cupboards without standing on chairs, wear s and get away with it and literally dance with their partners. But few of the nations female six footers appreciate the advantages inherent in their stature. In his clinical pediatrics practice at the U College of Medicine, Dr. Marvin L. Rallison has heard the complaints of many tall young girls and their worried, mini-skirt- cheek-to-chee- k even taller mothers. Finally three years ago, after a barrage of appeals from girls and parents alike, he accepted their challenge to do something about excessive height. What I knew about reducing the growth rate was somewhat equivocal if not downright discouraging, recalls Dr. Rallison. But after extensive research and consultation with other physicians who were experimenting with growth-stuntintechniques, the Utah endocrinologist started treatment on three disenchanted girls.' The effectiveness of the treatment depends, ironically, upon the successful acceleration of growth. Dr. Ralli-son- s patients were given weekly injections of female hormones to hasten the onset of puberty which, in turn, speeds up the attainment of final, adult height. The earlier growth stops, the shorter the person will be, explains Dr. Rallison. Estrogen injections and oral combinations of estrogen and progesterone are administered for approximately two years, and the girls are then examined periodically for 24 months after the treatment is completed. Dr. three pioneer patients are now one and a half. to two inches shorter than they would have been without the treatment. .Dr. Rallison now has 16 patients, averaging 12 years of age. This isnt the ideal time to begin treatment, he says. The younger the girl, the more effective the medication will be.- Most girls, however, dont become concerned about their height until the age the years when theyre normally taller g height-reductio- n Ral-liso- ns - pre-tee- n THE EDITOR the LSASSD Dear Editor: I would like to convey to the people of Utah the deepest respect and admiration we have for the members of the Utah Civic Ballet. Holy Cross Hospital blood bank has been accredited by American Association of Blood Banks, it was reported this week. The University of Utah Hospital announced this week it can no longer admit as this indigent persons who fail to meet state or county eligibility, requirements. Until the Division of Welfare or the Salt Lake County Commission accetps financial responsibility, such persons will be admitted only in emergency, lifesaving situations, the hospital said. If the patients projected height is under 510, she will not. be accepted for treatment. Im against tampering with height because medically its no problem to be tall, says Dr, Rallison, but Im convinced that psychological factors influence peoples physical health and If a girl is sense of well-beinextremely unhappy at the prospect of being six feet or over, it may be a great handicap to her g. social and psychological than their male counterparts. Despite his clinical success, The State Board of Examiners this week approved for submission to the Legislature a claim for $160,000 from a contractor involved in construction of the University of Utah Medical Center. The conractors, Christiansen Brothers Construction Co., and Finn B. In trying to win approval and acceptance, many husbands and wives become parents before they are emotionally or financially ready. No matter how intense and satisfying new love feels to young couples, they need to experience each other in a thousand different ways before their relationship is full grown, and strong enough to bear the stress of children, he contended. A woman who waits until her 30s begins a family with all the advantages of a higher income, a decades worth of savings ana household furnishings, appliances to make home life easier and nonconfining and often enough money to hire household help, giving her time to refresh herself mentally and spiritually outside the home. If she has worked into her 30s, she is also better able to make the most of her later adult years. A woman who has children in her 20s, however, has committed herself to a poor life plan. Before she is 40 her children slip away from her to enter high school and .college. In her 40s she is virtually out of the mother: ing business and has no other business to go into. If she tries to fill the emptiness in her life by entering the job market, she usually finds it freezing. Fort Douglas and the Univer- sity of Utah are both within Salt Lake City limits, Roger Cutler, assistant city attorney, said this week. In an opinion requested by the City Commission he said, Fort Douglas is within the corporate limits of Salt Lake City and subject to those Ordinances of the city who do not infringe on the exclusive jurisdiction ceded by the State of Utah to the U. S. Government. Mr. Cutler cleared up the long standing question by research and ordiance enacted by Brigham Young when he was Utahs governor. At the meeting of the Board of Directors of Kennecott Copper Corp. this week a cash distribution of 60 cetns a share was declared, payable on March 24 to stockholders of record at the close of business on March 5. w The nations first national register of historic places, to be published later this month, includes nine historic sites. |
