Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 1969 Rheumatoid Arthritis Caused By Invading Microorganisms? Medallion Authorized As Souvenirs Quest Announced for 1969 In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of completion March of Dimes Telerama Is - The weight of scientific opinion is shifting toward the idea that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by invading microorganisms, but the issue still remains very much in doubt, reports Chemical and Engineering News in a three part feature article on Arthritis by associate editor Howard Sanders. With the introduction of cortisone in the late 1940s and with proof cf its dramatic effectiveness in reducing the inflamation and pain of rheumatoid arthritis, many researchers began to think the disease was caused by hormone abnormalities, but the necessary supporting evidence has not been obtained and the theory that the primary cause is a bacterium, virus or other pathogenic agent now has the largest following. Strongly supporting the germ theory is the fact that the disease has symptoms similar to those of infectious disorders, inflammation, low grade fever, lack of appetite, weight loss, a rapid sedimentation rate cf red blood cells and a high count of white blood cells. This evidence is strictly circumstantial, however, since no one has conclusively- connected the disease with a specific organism. Actually, some types of arthritis (less than one per cent of all cases) are known to be caused by a microorganism. However, rheumatoid arthritis, the most destructive form of arthritis, affecting some five million adults in America, is not one of those types. Another body of. evidence is - - First Fossil Lamprey d, s. e - 28.000 Feet Plywood Made Every Minute The American Plywood Association says that the softwood plywood industry is heading for a record 1968 production of at least 14.7 billion squarp feet, or an . average of approximately 28.000 square feet of plywood ( basis) every minute of every hour of every day since January 1. , from arthritis like diseases found in animals. Because these diseases are caused by bacteria or viruses, some scientists believe rheumatoid arthritis may also be caused by such organisms. Various scientists have reported finding infectious agents also in the joints of rheumatoid arthritis paients, but others discount these claims, contending that the organisms were merely contaminants' picked up during experiments to isolate the organisms. Also the presence of an infectious agent in a joint does not necessarily mean that the organism is a causative agent or even harmful. One possible reason no organ-im- s have definitely been shown to be present in arthritic joints is that these organisms are difficult to culture by present methods. Another possibility is that an agent may trigger the disease and then disappear from these joints when the disease finally manifests itself. In the past, the prime suspect has been a bacterium. The first discovery of fossil lampreys is reported in Science by David Bardack of the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle and Rainer Zangerl of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Modern lampreys are jawless, scaleless fishes of the primitive class of verterbrates known to scientists as cyclosto-meThe typical parasitic kind of lamprey feeds by attaching mouth itself with its sucker-likto other fish and rasping a hole .into the body with its tongue. Discovered in ironstone concretions from the middle Pennsylvania Francis Creek Shale of northeastern Illinois, the fossil lampreys are very similar in structure to modern forms. The significance of these finds lies chiefly in their evolutionary meaning, for it has long been assumed that lampreys and their apparently close relatives, the hagfishes, had a common ancestor in or about Pennsylvanian times. Since the fossil lampreys show no hagfish characteristics, their ancestry is most certainly and it may be that the living hagfishes and lampreys independently evolved from 'two distinct groups. eel-shape- Page Three d d d DEMAKB n w d |
