Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES Friendship Cruise Planned May 27 Nearly 2,000 pleasure seekers will weigh anchor here May 27 for the traditional Friendship Cruise on the Green and Colorado rivers. The 195 mile boat trip will follow a southerly course on the Green River into Canyon-land- s National Park where it will meet the Colorado River. Boaters will head east, upstream along the Colorado River to the Moab, Utah, finish line. Although the annual cruise event, it normally is a two-dais expected that most boaters will want to remain on the river four days to take advantage of the Memorial Day holiday on May 30, according to organizer Jan Howland. Mrs. Howland, secretary of the sponsoring Canyon Country River Marathon Assn., said refueling facilities will remain on the river banks during the entire time. Both the Colorado and Green rivers follow winding courses into rugged canyons and rock terrain. Excellent camp sites are located along the route, as well as unusual hiking trails for y adventurers. Such a camp site is Anderson Bottom, where many boaters pause to sunbathe, explore riverside cliffs for prehistoric Indian ruins and to broil steaks over glowing embers. Enroute, the river country grows progressively more scenic as the canyons become deeper. Below Grand View Point and Dead Horse Point, now a state park, the river is hemmed in by cliffs nearly 3,000 feet high. Highly colored sandstone terraces and mesas, part of the new Canyonlands National Park, make the final hours of the Friendship Cruise especially photogenic. Regulation of water levels by dams far upstream on the Green and Colorado rivers have eliminated much of the danger associated with pleasure boating in the isolated canyons, according to association officials. The same Green River-Moa- b route will be covered in far less time June 17 during the annual Canyon Country River Marathon race. For the first time, a jet boat class will be added to the race, according to Mrs. Howland. The jet class will be open, with no specifications on horsepower. The only requirements for jet boats will be a hull at least 14 feet in length, a single engine and a -- y . boat-wear- co-pil- ot. BLM is Offering Coal Lands Lease A coal lease on 320 acres approximately 12 miles northwest of Castle Dale, Emery County, is being offered by the U. S. Bureau of Land Management. Issuance of the lease will be determined by sealed bids submitted to BLM prior to June 21, according to Robert D. Nielson, BLM state director for Utah. The bids will be opened June 21 at 2 p.m. in room 8103, Federal Building. In addition to the amount of the bid, the successful high bidder must pay costs of publication of the legal notice concerning the lease offer, usual rentals for the land, and royalties on any coal mined. Details concerning the lease offer are available from the BLM Utah state office, Mr. Nielson added. Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else. Will Rogers. FRIDAY, MAY 5, 1967 Moss Amendment Presented by Reclamation Act Senator Frank E. Moss, Monday introduced an amendment to the Small Reclamation Projects Act which would change the eligibility requirements to benefit urban as well as rural areas. The Utah Democrat, in a Senate speech, said that present nterpretations of the act by the Department of the Interior are impeding development of water resource projects in the reclamation states. (In the last few months, it las become evident that the Department of the Interior is developing a new interpretation of he law. The department is holding that projects would not qualify if, during the course of he loan repayment period, these projects might be used primarily for Sen. Moss told his colThis interpretation is eagues. the loan applications of rilling some very worthy projects, and it is holding up action on other applications. Sen. Moss noted that one Utah application under this program was returned to the State by the Department after it was determined that too much use of the water would occur. This was the application submitted by the Roy Water Conservancy Sub District :.n Weber County. The application of the West San Bernardino County Water District was held for months, because of the fears use of too much of the water, before it was finally approved. The Colorado River Water Conservation District proposed to develop a much-neede- d water project on the White River in western Colorado. The project sponsors were informed, however, that their development does not qualify for a small projects loan because more water would be used to support important industrial development than was required for irrigation, both of which are essential in developing the areas economy, Sen. Numerous other projects which involve municipal or commercial water supplies are under consideration that may never be developed on the basis of the new philosophy which is coming out of the Department of the Interior, Sen. Moss said. The Utah Democrats amendment provides that any complete water development project may be constructed for irrigation and domestic, municipal andor industrial use. The amendment broadens the coverage of the act so that many areas can acquire a good water supply. These areas are not large enough to go in for a full-scareclamation project. They should qualify for getting a small projects loan. There are no other sources of financing with the Federal government. The Departments of Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture and Defense, all of which conduct water project construction, have no provision for loans for the type of reclamation project needed in the west, Sen. Moss said. le ARTHRITIS-RHEUMATIS- M Do claims and double talk make doubt vou can get any relief ?ou arthritic and rheumatic pain? Get 100 STAN BACK tablets or 50 STANBACK powders, use as directed.
