Anti-Pover- ty THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, MAY 21, 1965 '1966 Cars Lack Safety Devices the Charges Speed King Art Arfons 1966 cars will feature fancy ing asleep trimmings and streamlined styling at the expense of the basic safety devices, says world land speed king Art Arfons in an artcile in the current issue of Saga magazine. Arfons, a leading car designer whose land speed record stands at 536 miles per hour, charges that the big auto manufacturers are neglecting the consumer by failing to make certain low cost, safety improvements that will cut into the accident rate and minimize injuries incurred in accidents. Arfons feels that top priority considerations for standard installation equipment should be given to no fatigue seats, carbon monoxide detectors, shoulder harness and fuel indicator lights. No fatigue seats, built to fit drivers and angled to keep them in a relaxed and alert position during a long drive would cut down on accidents due to fall at the wheel, he LEASED re- marked. Installation on the dashboard of a cheap chemical tube that turns yellow on exposure to carbon monoxide would also prevent dizziness, slumber at the wheel, and accidents, he adds. Arfons also favors shoulder harnesses over seat belts stand ard equipment, since statistics indicate that fatalities in traffic accidents are cut two thirds by shoulder harness and only one third by seat belts. A final safety measure should be a fuel indicator blinker light that flickers on and off when a car is down to its last two gallons. Arfons has witnessed too many fatalities as the result of cars running out of fuel suddenly at high speeds, causing sharp reduction in speed and the inevitable rear end collision. Less frills and more safety, is Art Arfons plea. However, he doesnt expect to see it in 1966. GRAPEVINE v Increased motorcycle patrols, doubling of canyon patrols and more intensive radar activity to meet seasonal problems in Salt Lake County began this week, reported Chief Deputy George Q. Min-utema- n The GOP's Wishful Thinking House GOP Leader Gerald R. Ford has predicted his party will gain 40 to 80 seats in the House next year. To this, Democratic National Committee Chairman John M. Bailey replied: Congressman Fords confidence in the Republicans gaining 40 to 80 seats in the House next year is the same kind of wishful thinking we heard in 1962 and again in 1964. V.JrWiwj In 1962, GOP National Chairman William E. Mil- ler predicted gains of between 50 and 55 seats. What happened? The Republicans gained two seats. In 1964, GOP Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Bob Wilson predicted a gain of 20 to 40 seats. What happened? The Republicans lost 38 seats! A Car Inspection - Why Not a Heart Inspection? We didnt break the law. We had our cars checked and our windshields now carry stickers for another year. A car can save lives. We are. afraid of the law which threatened to give us a ticket for not having an inspection sticker. This is one case where the state can legislate obedience. The magazine Your Health recently carried this note of cheer, If you are careless enough your present car should last you a lifetime. If you are careful enough about your heart it can take you through a long life span. It is the wonder engine of the body and can not be replaced. In some cases it can be repaired, if crippled, and it can be made to work better even though diseased. You paid the fee of $1.00 for your car inspection, plus the cost of necessary repairs recommended by the inspector. The fee to your doctor for a heart inspection is a most worthwhile expenditure. Heart inspection should be at least a once a year promise to yourself which you keep. Each change of season affects people who have heart disease.
