Chief Sheriffs Deputy George Q. Nielsen said in announcing the program that he had informed the architect for the Metropolitan Hall of Justice that a costly revision must be made to assure effectiveness of maximum security section of the new jail. The present plan, Deputy Nielsen said, provides for. windows that open outward and which are not protected by bars or screens. The windows open out onto a roof only four feet below window level. He said the jail research program would involve every phase of county jail operation and ad- ministration, including technique and procedures most successfully used by advanced institutions throughout the country. He said it would be a waste of time and money to contemplate occupation of the new jail until a study can be completed to assure application of the most efficient and most effective practices which be applied to the facility in the new Metropolitan Hall of Justice. TODAY'S EDITORIAL ' Support v Poll Shows Continued For LBJ The latest Louis Harris opinion poll indicates that two out of three Americans support President Johnsons performance in the White House and that Republican support of the Administrations policies is growing. The most striking factor in the Harris poll is that the 10 per cent of the lifelong Republicans who bolted their party in 1904 not only show continued, but even greater approval of the Administration. This indicates that Republicans who switched their party last year primarily over dissatisfaction with extremism are now supporting the President in his own right. Racking of the President by these Republicans is stronger than among the population as a whole. Gold-water-Mill- (Continued on Page Four) er |
