Show I L Laurence Burton Studies Statues Which Adorn National Capitol The other day a Utah visitor to my office remarked, quite correctly, that Washington certainly is a city of statues.1 As a matter of fact, some years ago Interior Secretary Stewart L. Udall raised the question of whether there are not too many statues in the city, or at least too many that are not very important. There are. . of course, liquor-by-the-dri- nk fine monuments in the city dedicated to the memories of the great figures of our nation's mstory. The Washington Monument, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials come readily to mind in this particular cwtegory. But there are other monuments and statues that commemorate events or honor persons long since forgotten except by a few, and in the overview of history these persons and events may be relatively unimportant, or not even important at all. But a statue, I suppose, is much like a law; it is rather easy to create, but awfully difficult to destroy. So, as 1 recall, Secretary Udall didnt get very far with his proposal to review and upgrade Washington's collection of statuary.Every time a member of Ids staff suggested that maybe a monument had little significance, 19 popped somebody-peril aps a descendant of the person honored-- to take issue. The Secretarys project was finally abandoned. Myself, 1 like the statues and monuments, even the ones that some people say arent important. Because even if they commemorate obscure events or honor people that nobody remembers anymore, they still add to the citys unique character. Maybe Pm just a softhearted sintimentalist, but even though I have passed through the Capitols Statuary Hall countless numbers of times, I still stop, or at least slow down, long enough to look at the Americans for ke Six-Not- Pearl The Old-Tim- ers Funeral Rites for Marv Lee week. .
