If you I thought, had been asked Mesa talk But with the a tourists. at Rangers by visiting Verde Park in Southwestern Colorado revealed quite a few new ones concerning the cliff dwellers. You wouldn't believe! For instance: If ita a half mile there, how far is the round trip? Did the Indians dig the caves? Are the cliff dwellings nude by men or Indians? What did the Indians use for water? Why did they build these so far from the City of Cortez? If the Indians were such gentle people, why did they kill General Custer? And this one. It requires a little thought? study: How many undiscovered ruins are there? We took a quick week end to visit the son and family in Moab, then over into Colorado to Mesa Verde and home through Silverton, Ouray, Grand, Junction. We made it a point to learn things, too. For instance, I learned why we never have to buy Sanka at our house. Sanka, that is. Not Instant Coffee. My Lady Fair Louise always orders Sanka. She uses half the little envelope, brings the other half home, empties it n into her container, which is already half-fuIf we showed up often at cafes which have sugar in little envelopes on the table, they would go broke in seven days. MLF takes some, leaves some. Still she frowns upon me when I ask for a doggy bag. Even though she eats most of the carried-awa- y steak the next day. One thing I didn't learn: How to pronounce the Indian word "ugh." There wu a campfire Saturday night at Mesa Verde, and four Navajo Indians did a couple of dances complete with chants. If we had been a little more hysterical we would have giggled because the dance centuries ago may have brought rain or a baby or a bride or crops, but its a little ludicrous now. Especially when the dancers are no longer bucks but must bo ancient chiefs and the dance tuns into a little shuffle and the chant goes from tenor to falsetto. So I told one of the Navajos (in an exclusive interview which would surely make me famous) that ever since I was a little boy reading about Indians I had wondered how to pronounce "ugh." I spelled it out The answer? A dirty look. Where did I go wrong? What did I do? Wo didn't get to ride the narrow gauge from Durango to Silverton, but we were in Silverton when it arrived, and we witnessed the Mg shoot-uIt wu fun. Kids of high five-gallo- ll were taken from your home, turned loose with a pack of screaming kids and one dog running after you, have your legs tied and be thrown unceremoniously Into the back of a car to suffer for several hours in the heat before being taken to completely strange surroundings?) She will venture timidly forth now but still isnt nearly as friendly as Hairy and Flora. (Hairy and Flora were purchased from Archie Pace three years ago for a quarter apiece. They were sentenced to several hours in the stew pot but were given a stay of execution after some serious pleading from a small boy with a big heart. Hairy laspsed Into senility for six weeks this summer, setting. No rooster within a mile. Flora got lonesome all by herself so she joined Hairy on the nest. They have both recovered now and returned to their did habits of chasing the cat and dog and following me whenever I go out Into the yard. They even produce an egg once In awhile as proof they were really worth saving.) Poor "Henny-Penn- y dashed under the house the minute she was released and Is still there.
