J. Reee Hunter Editors Outlook Police Brutality Against Police The tempo of attack against the Salt Lake County jail is gaining momentum. When it first became visible it was apparent there was more behind this onslaught against the police than at first meets the eye. visit at the jail indicated to us that d Our someone is out to discredit the jail and the police. There are so many people from the outside soming and going in the jail it seems incredible that the cry of police brutality could be raised at all. It seems that every disgruntled inmate and former, inmate is now given credence far outweighing their credibility. The police and jail are on trial but not in a court of law where both sides are heard. They are being tried in the press, without benefit of defense. Everything the police try to do as they bend over backwards to placate their tormentors is used against them as a tacit admission of guilt. Editors editorialize against police brutality as though it were a proven thing in this case. Witnesses are brought onto television to testify against the police bui the side of the police is never heard. For example, when one former inmate was shown on television he was asked where he got the sore on his neck. He said he got it as a result of not being allowed to shower when he was in the county jail. The camera zoomed in for a close-u- p of the ugly sore. Nothing else was said, the man's word was the only thing that came to the television viewers. The Utah Independent editor was shown the mug shot taken of the man as he entered jail. It was apparent that he already had acne so bad it was ready X break into a boil at any time. That was never shown the viewing audience. There is a discrepency in what this man said and what was told us by the medical personnel in the dispensary and an inmate in the laundry. The former inmate indicated he was not allowed to take a shower while these other people said he took a shower nearly every day. Their testimony was never heard by the television viewers. Only one side was heard and seen. Furthermore, as if to substantiate what the former inmate was saying, Commissioner James Barker was sitting by his side and expressed his indignation that such things could happen. That there is police brutality, there can be no doubt. But in todays world most of the brutality, verbal and physical, is directed against the police. As the prison doctor said to us, the jailers take far more abuse than the inmates. It is becoming more apparent that something and someone is behind this latest move against the police. We would like to know who it is and why. On the one hand the government is telling them they cant charge too much because of the price freeze while at the same time they tell the merchant he cant charge too little. It seems to us we fought dictators during World War II so they couldnt tell us what to do. Apparently, the fight for freedom for which World War II was fought, was lost. K-M- art i Doubled Nothing Is Nothing The main cause of inflation over the years has been increased government spending. It may have sounded businesslike to make each piece of mail pay its way, but the government seems to have forgotten that all of its mail, including the military as well, the frank privilege of the politicians is carried without charge. Does it really want each piece to pay its own way, or is it federal mail? trying to soak the rest of us for all the The post office used to collect millions of dollars from magazines such as Look, but one after another, they are dropping out of business. The government wanted to collect twice as much from Look. Instead it is going to get nothing. The one city had received during these ten years fluoride added to the water system to bring the level to one part per million. The other had been without this amount. Studies had been made to see if there were any side effects. The results reported were that they decay rate in the one city with added fluorine were sharply reduced in the children raised in that city during this period. Further studies showed that this protection continued on into adult life. The American Dental Society were very enthused to find this result. At least some inroads were made into dental disease. My experience has sincerely been that the dentists themselves are the ones who have continually promoted fluoridation. I have' vo ng . , Continued on Page 11 |
