Katz The struggle against gold which is one of the main concerns of all contemporary governments must not be looked upon as an isolated phenomenon. It is but one item in the gigantic process of destruction which is the mark of our time. People fight the gold standard because they want to substitute national autarky for free trade, war for peace, totalitarian government omnipotence for liberty. Ludwig von Mises am forming an organization to campaign for a return to the gold standard, and I would like to ask you to join with me in this endeavor. Most social matters are I only of ideological interest, but the issue of a gold standard is not only a moral issue; it is an issue of immense practical concern to people like me and you. At first glance the issue of a gold standard appears to be peripheral to most of the major issues ot today. But the importance of the gold standard is that it underlies so many other vital issues. If the country returns to the gold standard, then by a natural process a number of other evils will be corrected. A gold standard will put an end once and for all to the infla- tion which has plagued this country since 1933. And by ending the inflation it will destroy the rationalization for price and wage controls. It will make unbalanced budgets impossible and by so doing put a strict limit on the demands of 108 special interest groups which feast at the public till. By putting foreign trade on a more rational basis the gold standard will undercut protectionist sentiment and allow a lowering of tariffs, thus combating the trend to autarky which has developed since August 15, 1971. And by combating the trend to autarky it will apply a powerful force for peace in the world. It was similar movements toward autarky which preceded and helped to cause WWI and WWII. In attacking any of these evils directly one finds a tremendous political pressure behind each one. The pressure for price and wage controls was generated by inflation. The pressure for unbalanced budgets, leading to inflation, is made possible by the lack of discipline imposed by a gold standard. If one tries to fight unbalanced budgets or price and wage controls, one struggles futilely against these built in pressures. But if a gold standard is established, the pressures will reverse themselves, and the evils will collapse of their own weight. The mistake that most friends of liberty have made in the past is that they have fought against the effects, and failed. To triumph against these eyils one must fight against the cause. And the cause is the absence of a gold standard. But, as I said, this is an issue of more than ideological importance. The realization of this truth was brought home to me during the inflation of 1968-69. Phone 166-86- 5! By wishing that the tax revenues would support both he solved the problem. The budget deficit resulting from that act of evasion caused the huge inflation of 1968-6and that inflation created a turbulent emotionalism in the stock market in which the most irrational people (such as Fred Mates and 9, ality and ability to evade evidenced bv0 the new breed in 1968 was a direct consequence of Lyndon Johnson's initial act of evasion in 1966. He had created a society in which irrationality was rewarded and the irrational prospered. The principle which is illustrated here is that every society is dominated by the type of man who best exemplifies its fundamental premises. When a society is governed by evasion, it is the men who most easily evade who achieve the highest positions and Allen Klein) could build large John G.
