J. Reas Hunter Editors Outlook Beckers Criticism Editors Outlook Has Merit J. Reese Hunter Fred Becker, Republican candidate for Secretary of State, has criticized County Commissioner William E. Dunn for not Finishing his term of office in onejob before running for another. It seems there is some justification for this criticism. When an officeholder does not serve the full d official must term for which he was elected a be appointed to finish his term. This deprives the electorate of their voice as to whom they wish to entrust the powers non-electe- of government. As mayor of Murray Dunn won a lot of friends. Before finishing his term as mayor he ran for the County Commission and won. Someone had to be appointed to fill his place. Now, after serving less than half the term for which he was elected, Commissioner Dunn is seeking the office of Secretary of State. Certain questions become inescapable in the minds of the voters. Some of the following questions have been asked of this editor regarding the future and Bill Dunn: If Dunn wins the election to become the Secretary of State will he serve only half the time and then seek another office in two years, such as to the U.S. Senate or Congress? Who is going to be appointed to the important position of County Commissioner in Utah's most populous county if Dunn should be victorious? Is some deal being made behind the scenes to build up the image of another figure who is otherwise not electable? (It would usually be an advantage for the appointee to run as the incumbent in a subsequent election). Is Dunn really serving the people or simply using them to further his own political ambitions? As voters go to the polls at election time these are hard questions, along with others, they must ponder. Sometimes the voters are repulsed if they think they are being used by politicians. This is a situation, where, if Dunn is not careful, his political light which was shining brightly could dim and fade out. high-climbi- ng Presidential Candidates Par Excellence The faces and philosophies of the latest candidates for of the U.S. on the American president and Party ticket are not new to readers of the Utah Independent. American Party presidential candidate Congressman John G. Schmitz of California has had a distinguished record in the U.S. Congress these past two years. He is one who is dedicated to standing by the Constitution and has not been afraid to say and do so time after time. When he saw President Nixon reneging on many of his campaign promises Congressman Schmitz refused to go along for the sake of party unity. Schmitz is a man of principle and seeking favor of his partys leadership at the sacrifice of his principles is beneath him. Schmitz, who is Congressman from President Nixons own district in California, could not be purchased at any price and therefore had to go. All the powers that be converged on Schmitz in the recent California primary to eliminate him from contention. His voice was as the voice of conscience to Nixon as he continually stood by his word and his principles while President Nixon was busy casting his own aside. No man can stand the voice of conscience too long. He must either listen to it or eliminate it so that it will prick him no more. President Nixon chose the latter course, little realizing that by so doing he may have unwittingly engineered his own defeat. Tom Anderson has sometimes been compared to the vice-preside- nt late Will Rogers because of his wit and keen perspective regarding events of the day. Former dean of the Notre Dame Law School. They were so afraid that Humphrey would win that they let their emotions direct their voting. The results have been catastrophic for America. Had Humphrey attempted even only half the things that Nixon has done he would have been turned out of office in disgrace. As President, however, Nixon has been able to get the Republican conservatives in both houses of Congress behind him for Continued on Page 5 Readers yfflook Agnew Nixons Protection? Gentlemen: Based solely on Mr. Nixon's record for keeping promises, one would be justified after Nixons recent and vehement avowal to retain Spiro Agnew on as vice president, to bid a silent farewell to the Golden Greek, but due to circumstances this may be the one pledge Nixon will keep. Certainly not due to any acquired respect' for veracity, but from one of lifes most fundamental emotions, that of It is an assured fact that with Mr. Agnew next in line to pick up the dropped presidential toga, no Bremer, Sirhan, or recently self-preservati- Oswald is going to pull the trigger to put him there. Loners or not. (I think not.) All the assassins of American political figures have been Marxists, socialists, or Communists, but never to the chagrin of Earl Warren, pundits, and the mass media, a rightwinger. So the continued presence in the line of succession, of a man anathema to this scum, is the best possible insurance that the presidents heart will keep on beating.
