By Mark E. Anderson Merle E. Anderson Monday morning of last week I called a local feed store to inquire about the price of barley and oats. The best price for barley in truck load quantities was $2.80 per hundred weight or $1.34 per bushel, and $3.00 per hundred weight for oats or $ 1.44 a bushel. Yet, on November 5, 1971, the Department of Agriculture announced that Continental Grain Company of New York and Cargell,. Inc. of Minneapolis will sell $136 million worth of government oats and barley to Communist Russia. The Russians will get these grains for 40 to 50 cents a bushel. If Continental Grain and Cargell have trouble collecting, they will be paid by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, an agency of the executive branch of the U.S. Government, or more correctly put by you taxpayers. Those Americans who carry on this treasonous activity are in the stinking game to make a profit. Apparently, they dont care about the enslavement of the' Russian people nor about the d increasing danger to America, no about your dollars. In his titanic study, Western Technology and Soviet Economic Development , (Hoover Institution, Stanford University, 1968), Anthony C. Sutton outlines the part American equipment and technology have played in building Soviet industry. For instance, their entire automotive industry was created by America and western Europe. Dr. Sutton says: Taking the fifty-tw- o years since the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution as a whole, one important, that' the single most generalization may be made important factor in Soviet economic and military development has been the infusion of western, primarily Sutton speaks of seven American origin, technology. coincidences. Seven rimes, during its existence (1918, 1922, 1932, WW II, late 1950s, 1964, and today), the Soviet dictatorship has been even closer to breakdown than usual. And seven times in the West and particularly demand has arisen that in America a spontaneous assistance be supplied. The real reason for the current campaign for .more trade is that the Communists once again are broke. The big question is: Why are American businessmen willing to spend billions on Soviet industry only to find it seized at some future date? Sutton recognizes this problem. He says, The lesson for the West is that any joint economic enterprise with a Communist nation is inexorably destined for seizure when the advantages to the Communist nation have ceased or when no further financial or technological investment can be extracted from the foreign partner. That is why, says Alan Stang, the Wylie (Fino) amendment was killed last August (with the help of Congressman Lloyds vote). Opportunist businessmen wont risk their own money in deals with the Communists, but they will risk yours in the form of loans and Bank, supported by guarantees from the Export-Impotaxes taken from your paycheck. How long will the American people continue to allow this costly, treasonous activity? hard-earne- The Budget??? Session of the Utah Legislature is now in session. The record to date reveals that this session does not even have the appearance of being a Budget Session. By investigating the House and Senate Journals through Monday, January 18th, the following statistics are exposed: 38 bills have been introduced. 34 have been ruled upon as to whether they were budgetary or non-budgetar- y. 30 have been declared as being non-budg- et. 4 have been declared as being budgetary. By a suspension of the rules, requiring a 2nd and 3rd reading, bills are given these the rubber stamp of approval before the Budget non-budg- et Session. IS THIS BUDGET A SESSION??? The evidence proves that it' definitely is not! Ron R. Key Salt Lake City, Utah . , rt Non-Budg- It et is with great disgust that I view the conduct of State Legislators during the State Budget Session. This is supposed to be a Budget Session as set forth by the State Constitution, but almost every proposal before that body has been declared a item by 'the legislators themselves! ry non-budgeta- The Legislators of this state have taken an oath of office to defend and obey the State Constitution. They have violated that oath by turning this Budget Session into a General Session. Shortly before this session convened, charges were made that this Budget Session would be dominated by legislation. This is exactly what non-budg- et happened during the 1970 "Budget Session. The Legislative leaders answered, claiming that a majority of the Legislators were opposed to considering items. Their action of the last week has proven this non-budg- et false. What will it take for our Legis- lators to stand up for what is Constitutional? Donna Reinhardt Sandy , Utah There is nothing more true than that we have tried to live beyond our means as a people, and any person who does that gets into trouble. . HeberJ. Grant ' |
