The following reasons are quoted by historians for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Will you please compare these reasons with the current conditions in the United States of America; then start thinking Not Raising Taxes The Governor, desiring to bail the cities out of their financial troubles, included on the agenda of the Special Session of the Legislature just completed, an increase in the sales tax for the cities. This measure was turned down by the regular session of the Legislature which had the good sense to be consistent and turn it down again in the Special Session. In this, the Utah Independent commends the Legislature in exercising restraint in the face of great pressure from the Governor, local press media and others, to grant the tax increase. The only place that government can be restrained, and we mean local or national, is by controlling the purse strings. If government had its collective way, it would take all the money from the people and apportion back that amount which, in its collective judgment was needed by the people. Government will never have enough money to operate according to the way those who run it want it to operate. The people are not the government as some would erroneously have us believe. They only elect those who are to run the government and a general weakness of men is to exercise unrighteous dominion over others if the power is given to them. Money is power , therefore, the amount these elected officials have to spend must be curtailed if their power is to be limited and controlled. Uncontrolled ability to tax is power gone mad. and doing? THE CRUSHING BURDEN OF TAXES because of: 1. The piti-ze- ns leaving the farms for the cities. 2. The cost of the ever-increasi- unemployment. 77 run over and pick up my unemployment check, food stamps, job training and placement check, then drop by the university and see whats holding up my federal education grant, meanwhile you go to the free clinic to check on your scabies and pick up my new glasses, and then well meet at the Federal Building at noon for the mass picket of the stinking establishment. (Free Campus News Service) Thank you, ladies and gentlemen of the Legislature, for voting against giving this unjustified extension of power to the city Nixon - Deceit and Betrayal if there are two words which describe and characterize President Nixon's actions before election and after, those two words are deceitful " and betrayal.'' Mr. Nixon campaigned on promises which American Conservatives believed and with those promises he purchased their votes. Without the vote of the Conservatives Nixon would never have made it to the White Mouse. While Nixon has never been the Conservatives dream candidate. some fell they had nowhere else to go. They could not stand Humphrey (understandably); they fell that Wallace could not win. Therefore, many of them argued their only hope was with Nixon. This wav they thought that at least ihcv wouldn't be throwing their vote away. However, after looking at the actions of Nixon once in office it i painfully clear that Conservatives who voted for Nixon could not have thrown their voles further awav than voting& for this man. As it turned out, Conservative Republicans have been called sake of upon to vote for the socialist Republican program for the have fallen for party unity. The shame of it all is that many of them this ruse and have supjiorted programs of the Republicans which they would have opposed had the Democrats been in power. It is no wonder the Democratic Party is in such disarray since the Republicans have stolen their socialistic schemes lock, stock, and pork-barre- l. so-call- ed . ng Nixon has obtained the Presidency by deceit and has betrayed former friends of America around the world. stand of sanctions Rhodesia, Nixon seeks further expansion of against aid and trade with totalitarian Communist dictatorships. In this traitorous arrangement, our government purchases badly needed chromium from Communist Russia at about twice the price it could be Rhodesia. Thus, the American taxpurchased from payer is needlessly supporting the economy of a government which keeps its people in a virtual prison.- Our nation recently supplied Communist Salvador Allen de of Chile with military aid which will undoubtedly he used to further clamp the Communist dictatorship Allende desireson the Chilean While still supporting the anti-Commun- pro-Commun- ist ist anti-Commun- ist people. Nixon now seeks an expansion of trade with Red China and the further recognition of the Communist government which has murdered an estimated 50 million people in order to obtain and maintain its power. It is this same government which has been helping our enemy in Vietnam which has been killing, maiming and imprisoning American soldiers since the administration of John F. Kennedy. When our enemy, Red China, is scaled with our aid in the United Nations and our friend and ally, Nationalist China is expelled, the circle of betrayal will have been completed. We do believe, however, that Red China should be given a seat in the United Nations OUR SEAT. Every mother and wife who has lost a son or husband in Vietnam will have cause to mourn once more when this nefarious act has been accomplished. Their loved ones will have died in vain, all under the pretext of fighting Communism when in reality our has been it. In the government future, no good governhelping ment on earth will desire friendly relations with a government of betrayal such as the U.S. has been to Nationalist China, Rhodesia and ylhers. They will never know when it will be their turn to be stabbed iri the back. Truly it has been said, When treason prospers, no one dares call it treason. people, including the Patricians. 3. The loss of property rights by the citizens. 9. The continuing loss by the people of a voice in all levels of government. 10. The usurpation and centralization of power in the national government. 11. The developing tyranny and corruption of the rulers seeking ever-hightaxes. The following is a quotation from the book Let Us Stand Fast by Our Constitution, written by J. Reuben Clark Jr. who knew history and international law as few others have. (Mr. er Clark's illustrious career in- cluded holding the positions of: Solicitor for the Department of of State and United States Ambassador to Mexico.) Now in the last years, we in Stale, Under-Secretar- y America have gone a long distance towards the adoption of the Roman concepts, and the abuses against properly rights and human freedom and liberties which are possible under the system. And let me say here and now, that in the whole history of the human race, from Adam until now, Tyranny has never come to live with any people with a placard on his breast bearing his name. He always comes in deep disguise, sometimes proclaiming an endowment of free- dom, sometimes promising help to the unfortunate and down- trodden, not by creating something for those who do not have, but by robbing those who have. But Tyranny is always a wolf in sheep's clothing and he always ends hy devouring the whole flock, saving none. Lorenzo B.
