Wake up America In 1787 Edward Gibbon completed his work the Decline and Fall of the Homan Empire in which he listed five reasons for that fall. 1. The rapid increase of divorce; the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis of human society. 2. Higher and higher taxes and the spending of public monies for free bread and circuses for the populace. 3. The mad craze coming brutal. every for pleasure; sports be- year more exciting and more 4. The building of gigantic armaments when the real enemy was within the decadence of the people. 5. The decay of religion, faith fading into mere form, losing touch with life and becoming impotent to warn and guide the people. Are there lessons here for us today? ... Proposition No. 2 relates to changing the residency reis requirements for voter qualification. It proposed to duce it from a year to six months residency in the state and 60 days in the county. The arguments for reducing the time limit are that people are more mobile today and may be unfairly disqualified. However, tliis argument of increased mobility ought to be the very reason why the requirements should remain as they are. No one wants to see another without the opportunity to vote. But, it was to prevent voting fraud in the first place that the residency requirement was required. In the age of such high mobility as we have today it is even more important that this requirement be retained as a protection against fraud. Voters might obtain absentee ballots from states from which they have recently moved and cast additional ballots in the state of Utah. Proposition No. 3. Supposedly, this would simplify Utah tax laws. We feel that the interests of the individual citizen would not be served because there Would be a tendency for state income tax laws to follow federal patterns, even though this would not be required. The only simplification here, we feel, would be for the bureaucrats to lift more tax dollars easier while gearing our slate to the federal coattails. We urge your NO vote; on all three of these amendments. Kruschev Outdoes Trudeau talking to the National Press Club, Prime Trudeau indicated that Canada Minister would remain friendly to the United States even though she may pursue a different course. lie paid tribute to the United States for showing an understanding when Canadas policies do not coincide with the Americans viewpoint. When Canada continues to trade in non-s- t rategic good with Cuba or proposes the recognition of the Peoples Republic of f Communist I China, or, as sometimes happens, finds itself supporting a point of view different from yours in the United Nations, the. world is given evidence of your basic qualities of understanding and tolerance . So said smooth-talking- , Trudeau. Nikita Kruschev said something similar a few years ago but removed all the diplomatic rhetorical gobhledygook. In describing the stupidity of the American officals when they dealt with the Soviets he was more to the point: When we spit in their faces they call it dew. The Association's purpose is to determine which Representatives, by their individual voting records, stand for meaningful economy and fiscal responsibility in Government. An award is made by the N.A.B. to those Congressmen whose voting record, each Congressional year, reaches or exceeds a 75 per cent figure. SHERM IS A 100 PERCENTER. In the 91st Congress his every vote was a vote for economy and against excessive Government spending. The N.A.B. rates Sherm Lloyd as an -minded Congressman. Sherm has kept his word. The Communists, black militants, and revolutionaries will never succeed in overthrowing the government of the United States. But, unless they are stopped, they will scare the American people into accepting Socialism from Washington and Statist rule by the Insiders of the Establishment. This is what it is really all about! From American Opinion November, 1970 As each riot, murder, or kidnapping of high officials occurs the pressure will mount for Congress to pass laws which they otherwise would not pass. Just within the past week President Nixon has signed into law bills authorizing electronic surveilauthorizalance and tions which many feel violate the constitutional rights of individuals. And, who is there to object? Most people are patting the President on the back for taking a firm stand against crime. On the local Utah scene, Governor Rampton is calling for the legislature to pass more restrictive laws on the sale and possession of explosives. We have never had such laws since the existence of our state, even during the era of n the wild west. In a classic Governor Rampton is pleading the case which the anarchists and communists want to hear, namely more state control. no-kno- ck over-reactio- Other overrcactions are The most delicious confection that has come along in many a . . . nutty-es- t . . . munchy-es- t year!
