Steel have been improved to better meet the market requirements of the burgeoning West. Construction plans already resolved or on the drawing boards for 1964 afford a firm base for continued building activity in the Western States, he pointed out. Although these are favorable indicators for the steel industry in the western area for the years ahead, foreign steel imports still continue to be the major problem, McCall pointed out. The percent of imports of the total steel market in the western area, McCall said, are higher than any other marketing area in the U. S. Based on the latest available data issued by the American Iron and Steel Institute, imports of steel mill products during the first nine months of 1963 amounted to over 4 million net tons, or 6.8 per cent of the U. S. market. Of this, McCall stated, 22.0 per cent entered West Coast ports. Recognizing the strong impact of these imports McCall, however, still expressed confidence in the jAmerican steel industrys ability to overcome the competition through continued research development of new steels, higher quality, faster service on delivery and betcustomer satister faction by being on the scene. In this connection, he cited some of the new improvements that have been completed or are underway in Columbia-Ge-nevwestern facilities.
