Show WALTER KING HE arts TOURNE Y another state tournament lias has tak 1 en its place in utah high school basketball history and the shouting and cheering of at thousands throughout the state slate will not be heard for another year the annual meet this year was held in logan thursday friday and saturday last springville Spring ville representatives of the utah county divisions was returned champion box elder of the northern 1 L D S U of at sat lake and snow academy ot of the sanpete sevier southern divisions were tied for second place with one win and two defeats sensational playing from the first whistle on thursday to the final on saturday featured four teams as aa evenly matched as could be expected were assembled and in no instance was ono one team sure of at vic victory tOTY the widest margin between the winner and the loser in ill tile the tourney was eight points in a single game casket basket shooting goals from th the e middle of the floor side lines and any place inside the rectangle was nothing short of marvelous several players in the meet accomplished such difficult shots during the three nights that proved skill A and nd not luck as some appeared on the opening night the game brought out some wonderful high school talent such as norman watkins of 0 box elder and kenneth weight of springville Spring ville are examples of 0 the highest hype of basket ball players they were the class of the tourney games in every department of the game springville Spring ville was the best team they had veterans who had been through the fire before and the tourney games did not make any difference in their playing showing the same consistent form as during te t e league season the team was composed of big men who had an ail advantage over the smaller high school fives box elder failed to show to its best advantage the team could not hit I 1 stride during the games with snow academy and L D S U but made a nifty showing against tile the springville Spring ville players snow academy put up some good fights as did the L D S U no doubt there were hundreds of box bos elder rooters who were keenly bat cue broghan Dil ghan t boys did not corner the honors yet the team learn made a good showing and atter after one of the greatest seasons in the history of the school at tho the start of the year there was not much hope of dox cox elder Nv winning inning the division honors the prospects at timo time were only fair yet at the of 01 year the purple and white was one ot of the most powerful that has ever trod the brigham floor in norman watkins box elder has the greatest forward iu in utah this season of course there were teams not in the tourney which night might have had bad wonderful men but it would tie be almost 11 impossible to believe there are any better players than this slick little brigham wonder numerous critics have remarked that watkins was by far the best player in the serles I 1 his aggressive hoor floor work and sureness ot of passing combined with the uncanny eye for the hoop made him the most feared dorward la in tile lae games time after time lie he would shoot lem em iu in while being apparently guarded closely ile he was one of the most popular players in the tourney and won many friends off air the floor door by his modest disposition another star on the team was delmar at center his floor work excelled his rivals in that position lie ile was always in the game and did his share in the scoring he Is a strong man for an ail all state team the guards did not show so brilliantly on the logan floor as in the league games this Is due to the change of floors on the brigham boards the defensive machine had the guarding down almost tn Q perfection was a too great to become accustomed to in such a short time next year with four players and two good utility players back box boc el eder is in line tor for a division title and 1918 looks like a fine year for box elder to take the big honors A feature noticed by many was the dox box elder contingent at the big games on friday night there were more than from flux box elder and on saturday from the noise made at least halt the crowd was from brigham city the cheering ot of tho the box elder students was ot of the highest order and ranked with tho the best in the state this together with the general neat appearance ot of the players has given box elder a reputation and a good one too tao the agricultural college showed the visitors a royal time A banquet was given on saturday afternoon and on the same evening a dance was held in lionor honor of 0 the hoopers |
