Like many of our national holidays, which have changed from days of observing the memory of some national event into days of celebration, the annual July 4th holiday may have lost some of its significance in the minds of many Americans. Although the theme of the 4th is more condusive to the celebrating spirit, since it marked a new step forward in our nation a time for shouting with excitement all the modern means of celebrating has made it all too easy to forget the reason for the festivities. Do we understand the meanof the independence which we ing are commemorating? Are the children of our communities aware of the suffering, the bloodshed and the toil that went into the independence of our nation? Or are they more wrapped up in the thrill of the holiday the fireworks, the rodeos, picnics and fishing trips? Or maybe the youngsters understand the history of our nation better than we adults. The schools are doing a splendid job of instilling patrotism in the students. As adults, we may take too much for Our nation has grown to the point that it is a controlling factor in world government. Small nations look to the United States as their only means of protection. However, herein lies one of the problems which has created a Pandoras Box1 situation. The constant drain of the wealth of the nation to support our small neighbors is a worthy cause, but one that is causing some concern. True, we are militarily strong, and in a good position to fight off any attack from aggressors. Birchell Funeral services were held Monday in the Ballard Ward chapel for John Caleb Birchell, 84, who died June 27 in a Roosevelt hospital of pneumonia. He was born Dec. 28, 1883 in Park City a son of Joshua and Millie Jane Smith Birchell. He married Ida Rolfe July 3, 1911 in Vernal. He claimed his farm land under the homestead act and was still living there at the time of his death.
