Sagebrush to be sprayed throughout area Hundreds of tons of low value sagebrush will be killed in a few weeks on nearby public lands. But growing in its place will be even more tons of better forage and an improved watershed. BLM has recently awarded a contract to aerial spray some 5,000 acres of sagebrush land. About 3,000 of these acre are on Diamond Mountainand, 320 acres are just east of Lapoint. Another 1,680 acres of land will be sprayed on Blue Mountain. Aerial sagebrush spraying Is done with a small flxed-wln- g aircraft. A solua low tion Is dropped from altitude at the rate of 5 gallons per acre. O'dell A. Frandsen, Vernal District Manager, explained that the selective spray kills the sagebrush within a few weeks but does not kill the better range plants. Grasses and forbs growing among the sagebrush are then free to use all the light, water, and nutrients for this own growth. Existing grass plants grow larger - new plants come In. The volume of range forage is expected to Increase some three times as a result of the spraying, Mr. Frandsen said.
