Marcusen Friday issued a most optimistic statement, declaring that there is not the slightest doubt as to the success of both the state and national Republican tickets. That Herbert Hoover will carry Utah by 40,000 was Mr. Marcusens prediction and he said the various state candidates will win by overwhelming majorities. In addition to the national ticket, keen interest is bong shown in the candidacies of Ernest Bamberger for United States Senator and William H. Wattis for Governor. The election of both has been earnestly urged by Senator Reed Smoot and reports from every section of the state indicate a sweeping victory for both of them. Because some Utahns may have lost sight of the national significance of the governorship, Senator Smoot a few days ago dwelt at some length upon this point According to law the governor of Utah fills certain vacancies, among them that of United States Senator. This means that in the event that anything should happen to Senator Smoot, the governor would appoint someone to take his seat in the upper house of Congress. If the governor be a Democrat, of course he would name a Democrat for the Senate. What a travesty it would be for Utah to have a Democrat Senator in the event of Senator Smoots retirement. The people demonstrated their confidence and trust in Senator Smoot when they gave him a majority of 35,000 votes at his last election. It is unthinkable that these same people would elect a governor who would, if he had a chance to, name a Democrat to succeed Utahs illustrious Senator. Leading Republicans do not believe for a moment that the people will do any such thing. They are predicting the election of William H. Wattis by a tremendous vote. His election will safeguard Utah and is believed to be certain.
