Show THE CITIZEN 12 THE DEMOCRATIC Convention at Houston had so many eulogies prepared that politics in general came to an absolute standstill. There was the serious side and the humorous as well. In this city, as the Tribune flashed the doings of the convention verbatim to the people in the street, a Pantages music box just across the street carried the song This came Laugh, Clown, Laugh. just as a coincidence, and created much humorous comment on the street. E. W. Kelly, native of Utah, has entered the governor race and his many friends are rallying around him to push him over as a winner at the Republican convention. Kelly, formerly of Fillmore, is now a successful business man of this city and Ogden. Success in business, success in politics, his many friends aver, and there is something to that. The general opinion is that if our influential business men would come out and run for office, the tax load would not be so heavily weighted upon the shoulders of the people. A successful business man has gone through the school of experience and he knows how to stop the leaks. Kelly has every qualification for the position as governor. He has been a staunch Republican all his life. If he gets the nomination he will do his best to serve the people, for he feels that the Republicans will win; if he does not get the nomination he is ready to pull his coat and pull for the ticket just the same. Preston G. Peterson, popular state road commissioner, hailing from Provo, is being talked of strongly for Congress. While Congressman E. 0. Leatherwood will seek renomination, it now looks like he will have to go fight to get through a the nomination, and there is much talk of a successor. Many business men are trying to force out Theodore L. Holman for the nomination. Hoi man is one of. the state party leaders, has every qualification for congressman, and if all his friends rally about him he could just about cinch the nomination. E. R. Callister is also being talked of for this nomination. Ned stands well with the party, and the boys, and is looked upon as a real dark horse if he enters the race. four-corner- ed According to street reports, Ray Van Cott can have the nomination on the Democratic ticket if he so desires. Van Cott is one of our leading attorneys, and is well thought of among all classes of people. Among Republicans mentioned for the state supreme court are three of the Third district court judges, Lee B. Wright, William M. McCrea and Ephraim Hansen. Others proposed, among whom are several active candidates, are Thomas D. Lewis of Salt Lake, former district court judge; Joseph H. Erickson of Richfield, also a former district court judge; Alfred Agee of Ogden, Judge Melvin C. Harris of Logan, Judge George S. Barker of Ogden, and William H. Folland, city attorney of Salt Lake. ficer infringing on his prerogatives; as a post commander he was equally vigilant to detect the slightest neg. lect, even of the most trivial order. I have heard in the oid army an anecdote very characteristic of Bragg. On one occasion, when stationed at a post of several companies commanded by a field officer, he was himself commanding one of the companies and at the same time acting as post quartermaster and commissary. He was first lieutenant at the time, but his captain was detached on other duty. As commander of the company he made a requisition upon the quartermaster himself for something he wanted. As quartermaster he de- W. GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP. The very essence of business is the expectation of a profit on the part of those who conduct it. Government is conducted from an entirely different motive. When business is in private hands, it is expected to be run for the benefit of the owners. When the government steps in, the purchas- ers, users, and beneficiaries of what the government undertakes to supply insist that the concern should be conducted for their benefit. It does not eliminate selfishness; it simply transfers it in part from, the seller to the purchaser. Under these conditions it ceases to be a real business, becomes lacking in enterprise and initiative and does not have any mo. tive to provide improved service. . clined to fill the requisition, and endorsed on the back of it his reasons for so doing. As company commander he responded to this, urging that his requisition called for nothing but what he was entitled to, and that it was the duty of the quartermaster to fill it. As quartermaster he still persisted that he was right. In this conation of affairs Bragg referred the whole matter to the commanding officer of the post. The latter, when he saw the nature of the matter, ex- - Calvin Coolidge. GRANT TELLS ONE. Bragg was a remarkably intelliman, profesgent and sionally and otherwise. He was also thoroughly upright. But he was possessed of an irascible temper, and was naturally disputatious. A man of the highest moral character and the most correct habits, yet in the old army he was in frequent trouble.
