Show I THE CITIZEN WYOMING HAS PHOSPHATE. J f When the National Conservation Commisison was appointed by Presi-- 1 dent Roosevelt in 1908, it called atten- tion to the fact, among others, that there was an apparent shortage of phosphate rock in the United States. Inasmuch as phosphate rock is the principal source of phosphorous for plant food, any possible shortage was viewed by economists as a distinct menace to our future crop production. The next season the Geological Sur- vey put a number of geologic parties into the field, especially in the Rocky Mountain states, with the result that thousands of acres in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho were found to be underlaid e phosphate rock. by The first discovery of phosphate rock in Montana was made by the Geological Survey in 1910. Since that date successive discoveries have been announced by the Department of the Interior in a series of Geological SurThe latest report vey publications. in this series, just issued by the Geological Survey, is entitled Phosphate Rock in the Three Forks Yellowstone The region Park Region, . Montana. described comprises about 7,000 square miles, a considerable part of vhich is underlaid by beds of phosphate rock of workable thickness. In this region, however, the phosphate is thinner and of poorer quality than in other parts of Montana or in southeastern Idaho. The report includes observations on the western phosphate field as a whole and on the occurrence, composition, and origin of the phosphate rock. It also discusses the region by districts and gives measurements of the phosphate beds,, together with the phosphate content of the samples analyzed. The report, which is Bulletin 795-of the Geological j j I I , high-grad- G Survey, may be purchased from the superintendent of documents, Washington, D. C., for 20 cents. If anyone tried to figure up the time which the paid servants of the American people in the House of Representatives and the Senate have wasted on this question, the value of the lost time charged against the pub, lic payroll would be astounding. For political purposes Muscle Sho- als has been magnified into national issue, when in reality it is just one ordinary power project similar to many which are built and operated by private companies all over the United States. Muscle Shoals is a typical example of what happens to an industry which becomes bogged in the quagmire of the taxpayers lose, the politics country loses and private development is discourage with resulting loss and detriment to territory affected. RATES The country has spent $30,000,000 and the railroads have spent $95,000, 000, in attempting to value the railroads for the purpose of That $125,000,000 has had to go into an investigation of which less than 10 per cent of the work has been rate-makin- g. done. The whole matter is now in litigation and will probably be in that condition for years. But even if the investigation is completed and the litigation ended, the valuation will not be worth much as a basis for rates, or , PLAYING THE GAME ARE you playing the game on the field of life?
