He was soon forced to give up this title also, due to the newer and greater responsibilities given him. Mr. Cates was the first engineer to introduce the underground method of caving on a large scale in the Arizona field. Through his efforts, the Ray mine which, previous to his takr ing charge, had been a failure, was made a success. Up to December 31, 1922, 25,106,650 tons of ore had been treated and dividends amounting to $25,412,620.67 had been paid the dividends being slightly more than $1.00 per ton of ore produced. On August 1, 1919, Mr. Cates was made assistant general manager of the Utah Copper Company. He was also made assistant general manager of the Bingham & Garfield Railway Co., a subsidiary of the Utah Copper. As yet Mr. Wattis has not come out openly that he will be a candidate but if he does he will have a strong following.
