Show THE CITIZEN waterproof. One of the simplest ways of keeping the detonator dry is by plastering with common yellow kitchen soap after the detonator and fuse have been imbedded in the dynamite cartridge. Care, of course, should be toxen to drive out any trout which may be lying in the section to be blasted, but as a general rule the work of placing the cartridges will accomplish this result. As the effect is entirely local the explosion will not kill fish at a distance. J. Schlink, in their book, Your Moneys Worth, published by the Macmillan company. The testing laboratory referred to iSjL already approved more than types of appliances, including gas ranges, space heaters, flexible gas tubing, and water heat 5,-0- 00 gas-burni- ng ers. An increasing number of manufacturers of appliances are now making only products that have been approved by the testing laboratory and now bear its Blue Star approval seal. Gas companies are also pledging themselves to sell nothing but appliances bearing this seal. MACHINERY AGE Modem mechanical equipment has made possible unthought-o- f efficiency. Whether it be in electric attachments for the home, such as washing machines, percolators and so on, or labor-savin- g machines for industry and the farmer, power driven machinery has done more than any other agency to abolish drudgery and time-wastin- g. The modem housewife can do practically all of her work by pressing a button or turning a switch; the factory owner can limit hisremployes to well paid experts and still increase his output by using the latest type of machinery; road builders, lumbermen, and construction engineers can accomplish the industrial feats of today at lower cost with the powerful Caterpillar tractors, mammoth shovels, excavators, graders and other heavy duty machines. We are living in what might be truly called the Age of Machinery. 9 ous as California sunshine, is flooding the rooms. The entire company, exactly as it now appears in New York, will be taken on this tour. Mr. Ames long has had the idea of establishing a permanent Gilbert and Sullivan company in America and he feels that the organization should not be confined to New York, but should make regular visits to the chief cities of the country. The Mikado, Iolanthe, and The Pirates of Penzance will be given on tour exactly as they are presented in New York City. Because of the unusual expense attached to such a venture, it will be possible only to play short engagements in the largest cities. The problem of assuring ample supplies of petroleum over a long future is of keen concern, says Judson C. Welliver, in The American Review of Reviews. From the beginning, there have been epochs of anxiety, predictions of shortage. Yet demand gains by leaps and bounds, and supply keeps pace. There have been at times, threats at others of shortof age. But economic factors have always wrought corrections ; if there is prices presently tend downward and production decreases; if prices move upward and furnish the urge for an increase of production, which restores the balance. Constant discovery of new fields, deeper and ever deeper drilling, larger recoveries from the sands, more efficient refining, and the cracking of a. constantly greater proportion of the heavy oil all these things have kept supplies in pace with demand. It is now realized that if ever the supply of well oil definitely sags, there is an almost inexhaustible resource at hand, in the shales which are scattered throughout many states, and in the distillation of oil from coal. Scientists, technologists, government initiative, and the industrys interest have united in the research and investigation which seems to assure against a motor-fufamine. over-productio- n, over-productio- n, under-productio- n, oil-beari- ng BIG PARK-UTA- DIVIDENDS H After paying almost dividends, the Park-Uta- h $35,000,000 Mines are still paying dividends as high as those established during the war when metals were far higher-price- d. This is made possible through improvements in handling methods, through junking old processes and installing new ones whenever there is a saving in sight. It is like the farmer buying fertilizer for his fields; the fertilizer costs money, but it gets results.
